How Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and the Justice League Get in Killer Shape

The Nov. 17 release of Justice League Part One is swiftly approaching. Between teaser trailers, press junkets, and simmering heat surrounding the stars, fans simply can’t get enough.

One thing we certainly can’t ignore is just how good the Justice League cast looks. The powerful combination of on-screen talent has proved more than just their acting ability; the six stars look strong, fit, and ready for battle. These are the workouts and diets the stars of one of 2017’s most anticipated films followed to get in superhero shape.

Jason Momoa conquers the seven seas and the rock wall

If you want to rule the Seven Seas, you need superhero strength and an eight pack — yes, an eight pack — to do so. Those are the requirements set by Jason Momoa, Justice League‘s Aquaman. The Game of Thrones star, notorious for his rugged, mountain man appearance and insanely large biceps, has been hitting the gym like crazy for the latest DCEU installment.

The star is an avid rock climber, and having legendary mountaineer Mark Twight as a trainer doesn’t hurt. He had to step his game up to play the barbarian king of the sea, though; this video Momoa posted to his Instagram shows him pounding out pull-ups at the gym. Thanks to Momoa’s Instagram, we also know he trains in “savage mode” with front levers and a healthy diet of meat, veggies, and just a little bit of Guinness.

Henry Cavill transforms from mortal to Superman

Gone are the days when Superman could be mistaken for a bird or a plane. The DCEU Superman needs more than lanky limbs and a quick mind to fill out the spandex suit. Trainer Michael Blevins helped Henry Cavill reach the perfect balance of tall, dark, handsome, and impossibly ripped for Justice League.

“Our goals are superficial in nature: to appear impossibly lean and muscular,” said Blevins. Cavill’s training focused on athleticism and borrows moves from CrossFit. Cavill completed circuits and timed workouts of gymnastics training, Olympic lifting, and plyometrics. The combination sought to build functional strength and endurance as well as the muscles we’ve come to love on our Superman.

Gal Gadot evolves into Wonder Woman

There’s no denying that Gal Gadot is as close to a real-life Wonder Woman as we’re going to get. The former Israeli soldier and record-breaking blockbuster star champions motherhood, women’s rights, and late-night television alike; all while looking ridiculously fit and healthy.

So what’s her wondrous secret? Gadot trained with Twight along with Momoa and immediately expressed concerns about bulking up. “I don’t want to look like a body builder,” she told him. In order to gain lean muscle over a few short months, Gadot alternated between cardio intervals on the stationary bike and rowing machines with squats, ball throws, and pull-ups to build strength.

Ben Affleck takes over as Batman

It’s been a busy few years for Bruce Wayne, and as a result, Ben Affleck. The Batman vs. Superman star immediately reprised his role as Batman for Justice League, and the DC Universe is already abuzz about Affleck returning to the silver screen with The Batman in 2018.

Affleck began his training for Batman vs. Superman with longtime trainer Walter Norton Jr. of the Institute of Performance and Fitness. Affleck needed extra strength on set, as the Batsuit weighs in at about 75 pounds. “This time around we did more bodybuilding,” said Norton, “We wanted him to be strong but we wanted to add mass … We lived on a lot of the basics, 80-pound dumbbell curls, heavy-loaded carries, and farmers walks with 60-pound weights.”

Ray Fisher ensures half-man Cyborg is full muscle

Cyborg may be half man, half machine, but for Justice League, he’s fully ripped. If Ray Fisher’s Instagram account is any indication, the star has been doing some intense lifting to channel that #borglife. Cyborg may have cannons for arms, but Fisher’s been turning his arms into weapons in their own right.

Men’s Fitness ventured a guess about the workout that’s producing Fisher’s insane results. “It looks like Fisher is putting in work in a CrossFit-style gym: there’s a Rogue Infinity rig, for one thing, plus the gymnastics rings and wooden plyometric box.”

Ezra Miller proves he makes a strong Barry Allen

Casting Ezra Miller as The Flash in Justice League sparked abundant online controversy. Miller, known for his roles in indie dramas like Perks of Being a Wallflower and We Need to Talk About Kevin, was second choice to The Flash star Grant Gustin for many.

Miller showed critics just how quick he could be with his speedy and dramatic body transformation. The star appeared on the red carpet for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice with what appeared to be an additional 20 pounds of muscle and quads ready to bust out of his skinny jeans. Fans of The Flash speculated Miller bulked up with some heavy weight lifting exercises like chest presses, deadlifts, bicep curls, and military presses.

Exercise is half the battle; the stars stuck to a super diet, too

Your parents always told you to eat your veggies for super strength, and the stars of Justice League are doing just that. Twight is a big fan of eating 50/50 protein and veggie plates. “Poor nutrition and inadequate sleep reduce the effectiveness of training by 20 to 30 percent,” he told InStyle.

Cavill’s Man of Steel diet is certainly nothing to joke about. A site dedicated to the British actor breaks down the 3,500 – 5,000 calorie diet into five meals, each packed with protein, energy-boosting berries, and carbs.
