Chances are, your motivation for achieving your new year’s resolution is already a little lacking. Willpower is hard. Whether it’s avoiding unhealthy foods, saving money, being kind, or simply just sticking to what goals you create for yourself, there is so much temptation luring us in all sorts of directions. According to Forbes, about 24% of people who set new year’s resolutions fail to achieve them.
There’s a much easier way to continue achieving your new year’s resolutions so you don’t have to make them again each new year: Break up your goals into smaller timer periods. This could be losing three pounds on your journey to 20, not spending as much, or decreasing your BMI every month. Setting smaller, more frequent goals will make it easier for you to accomplish your resolution by year’s end. That way, come January 1, 2019, you can finally have the opportunity to make a new resolution. Here’s how to do it.
1. Make quantitative goals
A vague resolution is bound for failure. Telling yourself you want to lose weight or simply save money is hard to stick to because you don’t have a form of measurement keeping you accountable. Make a yearly goal to save X amount of money each year, then divvy that up to a smaller amount each month. The same goes for losing weight. If you are trying to stay more positive, devote 10 minutes of every day to meditation or repeat positive phrases 4 times in your head. Measuring, especially at the beginning of each month, will help you attain those goals in a measurable way.
2. Reevaluate your goals often
Set aside time to reevaluate your goals at the end of each week or month. This could be putting a reminder in your phone on a certain day to check back in with yourself to see where you are in terms of following through with your resolutions.
3. Set a new goal each month, no matter what
Say you’ve lost all your weight or just feel like freshening things up, set a completely new goal each month. Maybe you want to continue losing weight but also implement more positivity or become more adventurous in some way. Don’t overload, but think of new ways to better yourself and your life. If you are the kind of person to not have a new year’s resolution, then improve your life by setting a goal each month. This could be making more sales at your job or eating out less, but whatever it may be, setting a new goal will keep yourself constantly striving to a better you. Either plan out a goal at the beginning of each month or at the end of each month plan a goal depending on your progress.
Another fun way to implement a brand new goal each month is by making one month a time to eat more veggies and maybe another the month of walking at least 2 miles per day. This is far easier than focusing on everything for the entire year.
4. Set daily reminders on your phone
This could be a phrase of positivity — or tough love — that pops up on your phone daily to keep you encouraged even when times get tough and you want to give in. These daily reminders will keep you going.
5. Know there’s no better time than now
If you want change, you have to work for it. If you are unhappy with your life, or think that by making a small change you can positively benefit your life, then do it. There’s simply no other way or no other person than you that can change yourself and your habits. There is truly no better time than now. The more you remind yourself of that, the more inclined you are to reach your goals.
