Joanna Gaines’ Go-To Breakfast and the 1 Food She Can’t Help but Indulge in
With Baby No. 5 on the way and a super hectic schedule, Joanna Gaines still makes it a point to eat healthy. Between raising her four kids and running her Magnolia Markets store and Magnolia Table restaurant, she takes a little time to plan and prepare for each week’s meals.
Here we’ll take a look at some homemade breakfasts Jo cooks for her family and one hearty breakfast she fuels up with to start her day (page 4). She offers tips on meal prep (page 5) and eating seasonal foods for dinner (page 6). Lastly, see which sweet indulgence she allows herself (page 7).
1. Biscuits and gravy
On weekend mornings, Jo has been known to whip up a traditional southern breakfast for her family. “It’s a biscuits and gravy kind of Saturday,” she captioned an Instagram photo of a pan of golden baked biscuits. In fact, she shares this recipe, which she spent a year perfecting, in her cookbook Magnolia Table.
Next: A healthy, drinkable breakfast
Freshly-made smoothies are an easy breakfast to enjoy on the go. Jo shared a photo of such healthy morning drinks made by her kids. The simple ingredients included oranges, bananas, cherries, and lemon juice. And a bonus: She got hers for just 30 cents. They don’t need to go far for the oranges, as the family grows them on a tree.

3. Banana bread
Joanna has said homemade banana bread is her favorite breakfast recipe. She’s made it for her kids on one of life’s busiest days: the first day of a new school year. She enjoys making it the night before and warming it up in the microwave the next morning — and she serves it with butter and a glass of cold milk, of course. She shared the recipe, which calls for just nine simple ingredients.

4. Eggs and pancakes
Jo enjoys a hearty breakfast to start off her busy days. She shared a photo of pancakes, eggs, and milk, captioned, “What a pretty surprise! Breakfast in bed from @chippergaines and the girls.” Her hubby Chip appears to like the same type of morning meal — he shared a snap of a stack of pancakes in syrup with over-easy eggs plopped right on top.
Next: Lunch is made easier by prep work.
Jo’s lunch may consist of fresh vegetables. A challenge of eating healthy is the prep work, she commented on Instagram. Her solution? “I like to set aside thirty minutes at the beginning of the week to clean and chop my veggies and fruits,” she wrote. The secret to getting her kids to eat veggies: Roasting them. She adds a little olive oil, sea salt, and pepper, and bakes them at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
Next: She eats what’s in season for dinner.
Just like she enjoys fresh vegetables for lunch, Joanna uses them up for family dinners. On a summer day, she shared a photo of a bucket of tomatoes, chard, basil, and oregano from her garden. “Looks like Italian tonight! #summergarden #lasagna” was her caption. She uses her homemade tomato sauce recipe for lasagna and spaghetti.

7. Home-baked dessert
Joanna surely doesn’t underestimate the power of dessert. With all her healthy eating habits, she knows it’s ok to indulge occasionally in sweet, home-baked goodness. It’s was a Fixer Upper tradition for Chip and the kids to bring a box of cupcakes when Joanna was staging a home. She also has been known to enjoy some brownie pie and hinted there’ll be a recipe for it in her upcoming cookbook Magnolia Table. We can’t wait!
