Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were both famous before they met. A mutual, also famous friend first introduced them, and things progressed slowly from there. It took awhile for the pair to finally get together, but one small thing, a long time ago, started it all.
If you’ve heard their names — or those of their kids — you probably at least know they’re a couple. But you probably don’t know what first drew him to her (page 5), or how he hinted at his feelings before admitting he loved her (page 6).
They’ve only been an ‘official’ couple since 2012 …
Though it might seem the couple has been a staple of celebrity relationship gossip for at least a decade, they actually haven’t been “together” all that long. Kim Kardashian first announced they were dating in 2012, the same year rumors of their budding romance started circulating.
Next: Their relationship didn’t start out romantic.
… but they were friends first
They apparently met in 2003 when he recorded a song — and made a music video — with one of her friends. He didn’t even know her last name at first, referring to her as “Kim Kardajan” when asking his friends about her.
Next: Kanye waited a long time to have Kim all to himself.
He may have waited almost 10 years to tell her how he felt
They didn’t get together until 2012 — but maybe that was for the best. Kardashian later admitted, “I think I had to go through that [breakup] to figure out what I wanted. After my breakup, I was feeling really low and down and he said, ‘Just come to Paris and see my fashion show.'”
Next: Kanye wasn’t her first serious boyfriend.
He was ‘smitten’ for years — even when she married someone else
Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries as part of a TV special in 2011, and Kanye wasn’t invited to the event. Thankfully for him, Kardashian and Humphries were married for a total of 72 days before they began the divorce process. It was then Kanye recalled what drew him to her in the first place.
Next: When Kanye saw this, he knew he had to have her.
1 photo changed everything
Shortly after Kim and Kanye met and began hanging out, he came across a photo that He later told Ryan Seacrest, “I remember I saw a picture of her [Kim] and Paris Hilton, and I remember telling my boy, ‘Have you seen that girl?'”
Next: So Kanye did the most Kanye thing possible.
In 2009, he mentioned her in a song …
Keri Hilson’s 2009 single “Knock You Down” featured a verse written and performed by Kanye, which ended with the line, “You should leave your boyfriend now.” Kim was dating football player Reggie Bush at the time, and sources speculated the verse was an indirect reference to Kardashian.
Next: His next mention wasn’t quite as subtle.
… and then he did it again in 2012
Three years later, he released a song titled “Cold,” in which he mentioned her by name and admitted he’d fallen in love with her. By the time the song released, the two were already reportedly dating. They announced they were expecting their first child near the end of that same year.
