Khloe Kardashian and More Celebrities Share Heartwarming Stories About Their Fathers

Mother doesn’t always know best, at least not according to these celebrities. They’ve shared the heartwarming stories of their father’s best life lessons just in time for Father’s Day.

Celebrities like Khloe Kardashian (page 7) and Ben Stiller share the best lessons they’ve learned from their dads. Plus, one celebrity father reveals the advice he gives to his children (page 10).

1. Hugh Jackman

  • His father taught him the value of education
  • He wanted him to excel at whatever Jackman was passionate about

The star called his dad his “rock” and sang his praises on 60 Minutes in 2012. His dad, Christopher Jackson, was Hugh’s best friend and fierce supporter since his mom left when he was 8 years old.

Hugh’s father had one powerful message for him growing up. “Education. He preached education. And passion, like find whatever you’re good at then do everything you can to learn every bit of it, and don’t go out into the world until you’ve studied,” he told the Associated Press. And it seems Hugh abides by this advice since he’s been nominated for countless awards and won a Golden Globe.

  • His parents encouraged him to try new things
  • Gates learned to leave his comfort zone

We’re extremely curious what advice the future Microsoft founder’s parents gave him. “My dad and mom were great at encouraging me as a kid to do things that I wasn’t good at, to go out for a lot of different sports like swimming, football, soccer — and I didn’t know why,” Gates explained to Fortune.

It turned out they were leading Gates to find what he was good at by comparison. “… it ended up really exposing me to leadership opportunities and showing me that I wasn’t good at a lot of things, instead of sticking to things that I was comfortable with.”

  • Miley’s father Billy Ray Cyrus didn’t just expose her to a world of music
  • He taught her an important life lesson about love

Miley Cyrus’s on-again, off-again engagement to her longtime partner Liam Hemsworth produced much speculation about their relationship. However, based on the sound advice her father gave her, we expect smooth sailing for the couple from here on out.

“Nothing and no one stays the same,” Billy Ray taught Miley, “Grow, evolve, change with each other, and celebrate your love’s journey.” Miley’s explanation for why they broke up a few years ago indicates she’s heeding her dad’s advice.

  • Kurt Russell’s dad kept him humble
  • He reminded Kurt to focus on the work, not the fame

Kurt kept a lasting piece of advice from his father, Bing Russell, for a long time. “I was just out of my teens, and I guess I thought I was something of a big shot,” Kurt explained. “So he sat me down and said, ‘Okay, they’re paying you a man’s salary. Now do a man’s job.'”

What did Bing mean? “Do what you do for the purpose of your work. Don’t do something just for the adulation of the affirmation of others,” Kurt said. Turns out, he even tries to impart this wisdom to his own kids and reminds them that admiration doesn’t last, but hard work does.

  • Gwenyth Paltrow learned balance from her father

The Goop owner promotes her ideas of healthy living to the world. But even a guru like Paltrow needs a reminder to stay balanced — and sane — every once in a while.

“My father and daughter had unwittingly taught me the importance of balance,” Paltrow revealed in her cookbook My Father’s Daughter. “Could I use some butter and cheese and eggs in my cooking without going down some kind of hippie shame spiral? Yes. Of course I could.”

6. Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller arrives for a screening during the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 21, 2017 in Cannes, France.

  • We can thank Ben Stiller’s father, Jerry, for some of his movies

Ben revealed his father’s best advice during a press event for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a film which strayed from his usual comedy lineup. “My dad said, ‘That which does not kill you only makes you stronger!’ That always stuck with me,” Ben said.

“It’s a real thing to get outside of those things you are used to and you do adapt … I think you have to take yourself out of your comfort zone in some way in life, otherwise, you never grow.”

  • Khloe Kardashian revealed the life lesson that her late father, Robert Kardashian, gave her

Robert Kardashian may have passed away from cancer when his kids were young, but his advice lasted them well into their adult years. “The one thing I would take away from how my dad [parented] us is unconditional love,” Khloe wrote on her personal website. “It’s the entire point of family.”

Although her dad is no longer around, Khloe feels supported by her sisters when she needs advice. “Even though I’m not big on taking advice – I don’t believe there’s only one-way-or-the-highway and we all have to adapt into our own routines – it’s so comforting to know that I have sisters whom I can ask about anything that may come up.”

  • Jim Carey took his life lessons from his father’s failures

Rather than pursue his dream of working as a comedian, Carey’s father chose a more practical route as an accountant. “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him,” Carey told the Maharishi University of Management class of 2014.

“[But] when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job … I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which is that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

  • Clooney’s father kept him up-to-date on current events
  • He taught him the importance of a just, moral world

George Clooney’s father, Nick, clearly knows best. He once revealed that he knew Amal was the woman for George the day they met. So it’s no surprise that George still abides by the advice Nick gave him as a kid.

“[Our family] always talked about what was going on in the world,” Nick told Salon about the family’s life growing up. “We talked about it at the breakfast table; we talked about it in the car. And we always wanted everybody in the family to know … about justice in the world. But we always tried to do it with humor and something that matched George’s and our daughter’s experiences,” he said.

  • The star taught his daughter’s never to let anyone mess with them

Bruce Willis isn’t a man to mess with, and he’s making sure his daughters aren’t either. “I taught [my girls Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah] to walk up to any young guy who’s shoving you around on the play ground and scream in their face that it’s not okay to be mean,” he told People.
