What We Know About Meghan Markle’s Relationship With Her Half Brother Thomas Markle Jr.
Ever since actress Meghan Markle began getting serious with Prince Harry, it seems like some of her family members have thrust themselves into the spotlight. Her half-sister, Samantha Grant, has garnered a lot of media attention, but not as much is known about Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle, Jr.
Here’s what we know about Meghan Markle’s relationship with her half-brother Thomas Markle, Jr.
A family divided
Meghan and Thomas share a father but have different mothers. Their father, Thomas Markle Sr., has been divorced twice. His first ex-wife, Roslyn Markle, isn’t on good terms with Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha. Thomas Jr. and Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha, have also been divorced twice. Meghan has been divorced once. This pattern of divorce seems to have followed the Markle children.
Thomas fears his criminal past will hurt Meghan
Thomas has had trouble with the law. Early in 2017, he got into a dispute with his girlfriend, Darlene Blount, and allegedly held a gun to her head, reports The Sun. According to reports of the incident, Thomas was attempting to get the woman to leave his house. He was later charged with menacing, pointing a firearm at another person, and unlawful use of a weapon, reports the newspaper.
Thomas’s ex-wife Tracy Dooley told The Sun she hopes the family’s mishaps don’t affect Meghan too much and that Thomas Jr. doesn’t want to hurt her. “I don’t want this to be embarrassing for Meghan. The last thing he would want to do is to hurt her,” said Dooley.
His sister claims he has a mental illness
The family doesn’t seem to get along all that well. Thomas’s sister, Samantha, has had a few choice words for him. Samantha claims Thomas is mentally ill and that he is a compulsive liar. For example, Samantha says the stories about their father, Thomas Markle Jr., winning the lottery aren’t true. Samantha posted on her Twitter feed, “Tom Junior is mentally ill. Don’t you think if my dad won the lottery [it] would be on public record[?] The Daily Mail believes any lie my brother feeds them.”
His substance abuse has been hard on the family
Thomas has wrestled with alcohol addiction. After the alleged domestic violence incident with his girlfriend, he is reported to have sought help for substance abuse.
His son, Tyler, told The Sun that Thomas understands his actions are embarrassing for Meghan and he’s trying to change. “He knows it is an embarrassment to Meghan and the family. He is very sorry and is apologizing to everyone…Due to being inebriated, his emotions got the better of him and he got into an argument with his girlfriend…I also want to apologize on behalf of my dad. Unfortunately, my father has a problem with alcohol. He is now in recovery,” said Tyler in his interview.
He hasn’t spoken to Meghan in years
The half-siblings aren’t that close. Thomas hasn’t had contact with Meghan since 2011. Since the two haven’t had much contact recently, Thomas said he doesn’t expect to get invited to the royal wedding. He claims the two aren’t estranged, but that Meghan’s move to Toronto, Canada, to shoot her show Suits contributed to them losing touch. However, he told Daily Mail he would be interested in attending if an invitation was extended.
Thomas wasn’t thrilled with Prince Harry’s comments about the family
There was plenty of media buzz after Prince Harry and Meghan spent Christmas together. Thomas said Prince Harry’s comment about the royals being the ‘family she never had’ would hurt their father, Thomas Sr., deeply. “Obviously, she had a family. She was very privileged. She got everything she ever wanted. We did the best that we could in terms of getting together for holidays and whatnot…My father will be extremely hurt,” Thomas told Daily Mail.
He says he’s proud of Meghan
Despite the family drama playing out in the media, Thomas says he is proud of Meghan’s accomplishments. Although the siblings haven’t been in touch lately, he told Daily Mail TV he’s happy about her success. Said Thomas, “I do have a sense of pride in Meghan being successful. It was just obvious from day one that she was destined to be somewhere really big. She’s always been a princess. She’s carried herself on that level from day one.”
