Meghan Markle and Her Mom Have More in Common Than You’d Think (Plus the 1 Thing That Keeps Them Close)
In the weeks leading up to the royal wedding, it was hard to escape the many stories about Meghan Markle’s outspoken family members. But there is one member of her family who managed to keep a little more of a low profile: Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. It has been well reported that the Duchess of Sussex is close with her mom, but not as many people know how much the two women actually have in common.
Here’s a look at the similarities between Meghan Markle and her mom. (Check out page 8 to learn Ragland’s nickname for Markle and page 9 to see what makes their bond so strong.)
They’re both divorcees
Ragland was married to Meghan’s father, Thomas, for close to a decade before they split, though they reportedly remained friendly while raising Meghan. The duchess knows a thing about divorce herself, having been previously married to film producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013. However, it has been reported that, unlike Ragland and Markle, Meghan and her ex-husband are not on good terms.

A shared passion for pups
Anyone who’s a fan of Meghan knows that she’s a huge fan of dogs and has a couple four-legged friends or her own. As it turns out, mama Doria Ragland is a huge fan as well. And, like her daughter, has more than one pooch. “She walks her dogs multiple times a day, or takes them hiking,” a source reveals to People.

Crazy about yoga
If you did any kind of reading up on Meghan ahead of the royal wedding, you probably saw dozens of pictures of her heading to yoga class with her mom. As it turns out, both women are huge fans. “(Ragland seems very serious about her yoga practice,” one studio employee in California tells People. “It’s clear that she isn’t at the studio to socialize. Still, she is very kind and pleasant. She always smiles.”

A penchant for giving back
No wonder the duchess is such a big fan of philanthropy! Much of her mom’s career life has been spent helping others. Ragland reportedly worked for years as a social worker at a mental health clinic. A couple days before the royal wedding, Us Weekly reported that Ragland left her job at the clinic so she could open up her own practice and focus solely on helping the elderly.

Both women worked in TV
Long before Meghan was a fixture on the TV show Suits — heck, before Meghan was even born — Ragland was working in television. She reportedly worked as a makeup artist after she finished school. This is how she met Meghan’s father Thomas Markle, who was working as a lighting director at the time.

They’re both go-getters
We all know Meghan Markle has worked hard to earn a stellar career in show business. But did you know she also worked part time on calligraphy? She even wrote out custom invitations for Robin Thicke’s wedding. Ragland, on the other hand, is a social worker — a truly demanding job. She recently quit her job at a mental health clinic, and has hopes of possibly opening her own practice.

Both women have half-siblings
According to her Wikipedia page, Ragland is technically an only child although she has three half-siblings. This isn’t dissimilar to her daughter, who is the only daughter of Ragland and Thomas Markle but has two older half-siblings. (Only we seriously doubt Ragland’s half-siblings ever trash talked her the way Meghan’s half-siblings did ahead of the royal wedding.)
Ragland’s pet name for Markle
Many parents have pet names they call their kids, and Ragland is no different. Markle revealed on The Tig that her mother calls her by a nickname — Flower. If that doesn’t speak to an adorably tight knit bond, what does?

The real reason they’re so close
The Duchess of Sussex’s strong relationship with her mother goes beyond the fact they have so much in common. As Meghan told Glamour in August 2017, her mom’s ability to be nurturing, encouraging, and a best friend all at the same time is what fuels their bond. “We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support,” she said. “That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”
