To say Thomas Markle and his daughter were disappointed he had to miss one of the biggest weddings of the century may be an understatement, as Meghan Markle’s father shares what ultimately happened only days before he was set to walk her down the aisle.

Markle broke his silence about his daughter’s wedding to Prince Harry, his health and, why he had to miss the historic event to Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid. “The [wedding] preparations were done by my daughter, who worked very hard to get everything ready for me if I came there and I feel bad she put all that working to do it,” Markle said. “But I couldn’t much about it laying on the couch with a bad heart.”

He recounts the difficult phone call he had to make when he realized he wasn’t going to make the wedding. “They were disappointed,” Markle said. “Meghan cried — I’m sure — she did cry. They both said, ‘Take care of yourself. We’re really worried about you.’ They said the important thing is that I get better.”

Despite being in the throes of wedding preparations the couple offered to fly to be by Markle’s side. However, Markle told the bride and groom-to-be to stick to their plans and focus on the wedding and honeymoon.

This is what triggered Markle’s initial health problem

The original plan was for Markle to ceremoniously give his daughter away to Prince Harry. Which also meant Markle should avoid the press.

However, Markle broke that important rule in an effort to boost his image, E! News reports. He invited the paparazzi to photograph him surfing the Internet at an online café, thinking the move would paint him a favorable light.

Instead of the shoot creating good vibes, it did the complete opposite. Photographs portrayed an unflattering image of Markle boozing at a cheesy motel instead of a proud father of the bride according to Page Six. Markle was beyond embarrassed and while the couple was gracious and forgiving, the debacle put enormous stress on Markle’s health.

“I couldn’t get over the fact that that had happened. All of that stuff was working on me,” Markle said. “I’ve got a bit of a heart condition. This pushed me a little further to the point where I had heart palpitations. I had to drive at two in the morning into Rosarito to a hospital… I had a heart attack.”

He thought he was out of the woods and could still attend the wedding

Markle was still determined to attend his daughter’s wedding after a short hospital stay. Against doctor’s advice, Markle checked himself out of the hospital, thinking his condition stabilized.

However, Markle wasn’t well. “At that time I started getting heart palpitations. I started getting chest pains. And I said, ‘I have to cancel,’” he said. “And that was because I didn’t take care of the heart problem before.”

Markle was heartened Prince Charles stood in for him even though he was disappointed to miss the big day. “I was honored. I can’t think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles,” he said. “He looked very handsome and my daughter looked beautiful with him. I was jealous. I wish I had been there. I wish it’d been me, but thank God he was there and thank him for that.”

Markle said he watched the wedding on T.V. like millions of others and cried. “I was very upset it wasn’t me, but the whole world was watching my daughter.”

He added, “The unfortunate thing for me now is that I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle. That really upsets me somewhat.”
