The 1 Thing Melania Trump and Michelle Obama Have in Common May Surprise You
There’s probably a lot you still don’t know about both Melania Trump and Michelle Obama. It turns out our previous and current First Ladies have something unexpected in common — besides their positions in the White House.
At a glance, it seems Michelle and Malania have nothing in common. Michelle was a lawyer; Melania was a model. Michelle has two daughters; Melania has a son. From their marriages to their philanthropic efforts, here’s everything that differentiates the two — and the one common trait they share (see page 7).
Places of birth
Michelle Obama was born and grew up in the city of Chicago, Illinois, where she and former president Barack Obama first met.
Melania Trump was born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, and didn’t officially become a U.S. citizen until 2006. She is the second foreign-born First Lady — John Quincy Adams’s wife, Louisa Adams, was the first.
While Michelle Obama graduated from Harvard Law School and practiced as a lawyer until 1991, Melania Trump attended the University of Ljubljana for one year before dropping out to pursue a career in modeling.
Michelle was raised United Methodist, a more modern branch of Christianity first formed in 1968. Melania was raised as a Catholic, one of the oldest and widely practiced religions in the world. She is the first Catholic to enter the White House since the Kennedys.
Both Michelle and Melania met their first and current husbands long before supporting them along their campaign trails — but in very different settings. The Obamas first met at a law firm and married in 1992. The Trumps met at a New York fashion party and married in 2004.
The Obamas brought two young daughters, Malia and Sasha, into the White House in 2008. Melania and Donald Trump’s only son together, Barron William Trump, waited until finishing the fifth grade to move into the White House. He is the first boy to live there in almost 50 years.
Michelle Obama’s philanthropy efforts focused largely on public health and education — especially supporting women and girls. She partnered with Malala Yousafzai to form Let Girls Learn, which raised millions of dollars toward global education efforts.
The current FLOTUS has thus far focused her efforts on a variety of charities, including the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Boys Club of New York.
They’re the same height
Melania Trump is one of the tallest First Ladies in history. At 5’11, she’s reportedly the same height as both Michelle Obama and Eleanor Roosevelt. They’re both still shorter than their husbands, through — both are over six feet tall.
