Miley Cyrus Reveals the Real Reason She Quit Smoking Marijuana (Plus, What It Means for Mental State)
Though she isn’t the only celebrity who has admitted to smoking a lot of weed, Miley Cyrus may be one of the most vocal former users. In 2017, she opened up about her choice to quit marijuana completely, and how it changed her life for the better.
This is why she really quit marijuana (page 5), and how doing so might have improved her mental health (page 7).
She remembers appearing high on Jimmy Fallon’s show
She recalled a previous The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon appearance in which she wasn’t quite as clear-headed as she could have been. Cyrus said, “the last time I was here? I was dressed as a bunny rabbit and then like a cat. There’s a reason for that: I was high.”
Next: This wasn’t the only time she made an appearance while stoned.
She once admitted she was high ‘all the time’
Cyrus hasn’t kept her past marijuana use a secret. She has admitted she wasn’t just high on Fallon, but also while filming her “Wrecking Ball” music video. Apparently, she never smoked before going live on stage because it made her “too scared.”
Next: Does she blame the weed for her odd behavior?
Did weed make Cyrus act strange?
From twerking to questionable hairstyles, Cyrus has caused plenty of controversy since her Disney Channel days. Was weed to blame? It turns out regular marijuana use can lead to poor decision-making and paranoia in some users.

After quitting, she said recording her new album was a totally different experience
Cutting marijuana out of her life made Cyrus even more dedicated to her music. “I’m actually the most passionate about what I’m doing with this record than I’ve been — I say this every time, but I loved making this record so, so much,” she told Fallon.
Next: This is the real reason she stopped smoking marijuana for good.
She had a life-changing nightmare about smoking weed
A recurring, weed-filled nightmare may have changed everything. Cyrus told Jimmy Fallon when she appeared on his show in 2017, “I had a dream that I would die during my monologue on SNL for some reason, that I would just get so stoned that I just died.”
Next: Could her nightmare have come true if things had turned out differently?
Can you die from smoking too much marijuana?
Like any drug, consuming too much weed can have serious health consequences. In some people, marijuana use leads to a dangerously fast heart rate, a weakened heart, and more. Your risk for both heart attack and stroke increases the more you smoke.
Next: Is there a scientific reason she felt “sharp” after quitting?
What happens when you stop smoking weed?
People who engage in heavy marijuana use, and then stop, often breathe easier — literally. Along with improved lung performance (a great perk for a singer), some report a loss of appetite, excessive salivation, and withdrawal symptoms like anxiety. Quitting, however, can improve your overall mental health.
