These Are the Most And Least Stressed Cities in America
In mid-2017, personal finance website WalletHub compiled a list of the most- and least-stressed cities in the United States based on the country’s 150 largest cities. It based the rankings on 30 key metrics but focused on four main factors: Family stress, health and safety stress, financial stress, and work-related stress.
Below are the top 10 most-stressed followed by the top five least-stressed cities.
10. Shreveport, Louisiana
This Louisiana city ranked No. 1 in lowest job security. With so many citizens worried about unemployment, the city’s residents see added stress and insecurities in other areas, such as family life. The city also ranked 14th for having the most health-related stress issues. This includes general health, mental health, sleep, and more.

9. Augusta, Georgia
According to Livestrong.com’s analysis of the cities, this Georgia city faired pretty poorly in its financial and family stress levels. The high financial stress, which includes income, poverty, and bankruptcy rates, likely adds stress in the family area. The city fell in the middle range for work environment stress.

8. Rochester, New York
Rochester’s 200,000 residents live in a quiet, upstate New York town right along the Ontario River. But they’re still stressed. Finances aren’t much of a worry in this city, since almost everything (including healthcare) is affordable. But out of 150 cities, this city ranked fourth highest in divorce rates. That explains how they landed in third for family stress.

7. San Bernardino, California
San Bernardino’s residents appear to have some financial and health problems. WalletHub found that this city’s residents rank fourth in the percentage of adults with bad health. Plus, San Bernardino came in fifth place for both city with the highest poverty rate and city with the lowest credit score. The city ranked the most stressed in California.

6. Birmingham, Alabama
This Alabama financial hub ranked 35th in work-related stress and 27th in family-related stress. They jumped up to 9th highest in health and safety stress, which includes general health, suicide, depression, binge drinking, and having health insurance. But the city, although it’s a financial hub, ranked No. 1 in most financial stress. This was based on household income, credit score, poverty rate, and more.

5. Miami, Florida
Although Miami ranked “average” in work-related stress, the rankings only get worse from there. They made the top 25 worst cities for health and safety. They rank third highest in financial stress and fourth in family stress. This means the area experiences a lot of poverty, personal debt, divorces, and cheating scandals.

4. Jackson, Mississippi
This city has a lot of health and family issues. According to a separate study, the city ranked third highest in the nation in divorce rates in 2013. Plus, WalletHub’s 2017 “Fattest Cities in America” study revealed that Jackson is the No. 1 most overweight city in the country. So it’s not surprising the city ranked poorly in health and safety, too.

3. Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland fell into the top 10 in three areas: Financial, family, and health. The city had the No. 1 highest divorce rate in the country. It also had the second-highest poverty ranking in the nation. Plus, it has a job growth and unemployment rate that is below the national average, according to Livestrong.com.

2. Detroit, Michigan
Detroit is the U.S. city with the highest poverty rate. It also has an unemployment rate of 8.4%, which is a whopping 4% higher than the national average. The city also ranked No. 1 in overall family-related stress and was found to be one of the worst cities when it came to coping with that stress.

1. Newark, New Jersey
It doesn’t seem incredibly surprising that the most stressed-out city in America is in New Jersey. This city ranked consistently high on all four of the main stress-related factors: Work, financial, family, and health and safety. The city has an unemployment rate of 6.3%, and Newark residents hold less than one fifth of their city’s jobs. The city also ranked fourth in lowest number of sleep hours per night.

5. Sioux Falls, South Dakota
This quiet South Dakota city ranked the fifth least stressed in the nation. The city had an extremely low financial stress ranking, coming in 141st out of 150. Their family stress ranking was even lower, landing them in 148th.They came in 136th in health & safety stress. The only place they came in “average” was work-related stress, where they took the 82nd spot.

4. Scottsdale, Arizona
Arizona actually had several cities on WalletHub’s least-stressed cities ranking, but Scottsdale ranked the highest (for the lowest amount of stress). The ranking said Scottsdale had an excellent quality of life, along with amenities such as outdoor activities, a thriving downtown, and a large waterfront.

3. Overland Park, Kansas
This small Kansas city ranked in the top 10 least-stressed for three categories: Family, health, and financial stress. However, the city actually ranked in the bottom-third of cities for work-related stress. But its strong standings in the other three areas put it at the third least-stressed in the country.

2. Plano, Texas
Plano, Texas ranked well across several factors in the study. The city had one of the highest job security rates and average hours of sleep per night. It also had very low poverty and divorce rates, and it ranked fifth in most affordable housing in the country. It was the only Texas city to rank in the top 30.

1. Fremont, California
The least stressed city in America isn’t in a quiet, Midwest urban area; it’s in California. The city has the lowest divorce rate in the country at just 11.8%. Among the bay-area cities (San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Fremont), Fremont was the only city to make the top third of least-stressed cities. Oakland ranked the next highest at 67th.
