From Jenny Craig to Weight Watchers, celebrities everywhere are hopping on the weight-loss bandwagon — and they’re getting paid big bucks to do it. But money aside, many famous folks are also shedding the pounds in pursuit of a healthier life.
With the help of diet and exercise (and in some cases, surgery) these celebs have gone through extreme transformations. In fact, we can’t even believe what they used to look like compared to their current physiques. Here, we take a look at the most extreme weight loss transformations of some very famous celebs.
1. Roseanne Barr
The star of Roseanne has made headlines lately as she films a reboot of her popular ’90s sitcom. But Roseanne Barr has also made headlines due to her tumultuous weight loss journey, which included gastric bypass surgery in 1998. Between Barr’s procedure and her dedication to weight loss basics, she’s maintained a healthy weight — a far cry from her 350-pound frame in the ’90s.
She told US Weekly, “I’m just doing the things you’re supposed to do. You know, moving more, and eating less.” Barr also openly credits a tummy tuck and breast reduction for her svelte frame.

2. Chris Pratt
Many fans loved Chris Pratt for his looks before he lost the weight, but now, the Guardians of the Galaxy star looks fitter than ever. Men’s Fitness reports he lost around 60 pounds in six months with his extreme workout plan.
Pratt’s workouts incorporate P90X and a range of cardio exercises, like running, swimming, and participating in triathlons. And he’s not in the business of cutting calories, either — the father of one still eats around 4,000 calories a day when he’s training this much, and he drinks a ton of water.

When Adele burst onto the music scene in 2008, she was significantly heavier than she is now — and she wasn’t ashamed. She once told People, “I’d lose weight if I was an actress and had to play a role where you’re supposed to be 40 pounds lighter, but weight has nothing to do with my career.”
The birth of her son in 2012 did prompt Adele to be healthier, however, as she quit smoking and stopped drinking 10 cups of sugary tea daily. Her nutritionist cited “a really clean diet, with lots of fruit and vegetables, plus lean protein and complex carbohydrates” for Adele’s slimmer figure. Regardless, Adele maintains that she’d “rather have lunch with friends than go to a gym,” according to Rolling Stone.

4. Jonah Hill
Here’s a celeb whose weight is always yo-yoing for roles. But right now, Jonah Hill looks slimmer than ever. Us Weekly explains Hill had to gain 40 pounds for his role in War Dogs, but he’s since lost the weight by keeping a food journal and listening to the advice of his nutritionist. He also listened to the advice of Channing Tatum, who suggested eating less and following the guidance of a personal trainer.

5. Drew Carey
Drew Carey decided to change his lifestyle in 2010, when he realized his love of beer and hearty food was causing him to pack on the pounds. Parade says since then, he’s managed to lose over 100 pounds and control his diabetes by making sustainable and healthy lifestyle changes. He says, as far as healthy eating is concerned, ” … I was at a wedding on Saturday, and I ate cake. But 95% of the time, I’m right on the money.”

6. Aretha Franklin
You likely still play Aretha Franklin’s timeless music today. And a few years back, she lost a ton of weight — 85 pounds, to be exact. People.com reports Franklin had surgery at the time, which caused her drastic weight loss. It wasn’t gastric bypass, however; in fact, she didn’t tell the publication what she underwent. But she did say the doctors told her this surgery would make her feel 10 to 15 years younger, and she certainly looks it, too.

7. Al Roker
This well-known weatherman has weighed up to 340 pounds, but those days are well behind him. In the early 2000s, Roker went through gastric bypass surgery, Today reports, when he slimmed down to 190 pounds.
It wasn’t smooth sailing from there, though. He went through a period of gaining back nearly 40 pounds after the surgery. Roker hopped back on the weight-loss bandwagon with a 28-day detox and strict diet.

8. Kirstie Alley
At 67, Kirstie Alley stuns by looking slimmer than she ever has. Us Weekly reminds us Alley rejoined the Jenny Craig program as a spokesperson in 2014 after gaining back about 30 pounds over the years. Since then, she’s dropped 50 pounds. Alley accomplished this by looking at lifestyle changes she could sustain forever instead of quick-fix dieting. “My goal is to keep this and maintain this throughout my life,” she says.

9. Jimmy Kimmel
Not all celebrities lose the weight in a super healthy way. Jimmy Kimmel tells Men’s Journal he took drastic measures to lose the initial 25 pounds, and since then has taken to two days of starvation a week to maintain his weight around 180 pounds.
On Monday and Thursday, Kimmel says he eats less than 500 calories a day by drinking coffee and eating a lot of pickles. On the remaining five days of the week, he eats huge portions of whatever he wants. We don’t recommend this approach, but we have to say it seems to be working.

10. John Goodman
Whether you know John Goodman from Roseanne or The Big Easy, you’re definitely familiar with at least one of his leading roles. And if you’ve seen him recently, you’ve also probably noticed his massive weight loss. ABC News says many speculate he lost around 100 pounds.
After going through a period of time when he didn’t even want to look at himself in the mirror, Goodman credits his weight loss to stopping his binge-eating habits and exercising as often as he can. Now, he feels better than ever.

11. Jessica Simpson
During Jessica Simpson’s first pregnancy, she gained an excessive 70 pounds — and that certainly doesn’t come off easily. But thanks to the wonders of a healthy diet and lots of exercise, she looks better than ever after having two kids.
Fox News reports she keeps to a healthy diet and works out five days a week, which includes a mix of strength training and cardio with a trainer for three of those days. She also says she never had a specific goal weight in mind; she just wants to look and feel healthy, which she has certainly accomplished.

12. Ricki Lake
This celeb may be known for her talk show, but she’s made headlines due to her Dancing with the Stars performances and subsequent weight loss. Shape says she lost 20 pounds and several inches on the show, which really proves she put a ton of effort into her dance moves. She also used a food delivery service to give her perfectly portioned meals that equated to 1,400 calories a day. And she made sure to get at least eight hours of sleep a night.

13. Russell Crowe
The Oscar winner faced a tremendous challenge after he packed on the pounds for a role in 2016’s The Nice Guys, according to US Weekly. He told an Australian radio show, “I was [268 pounds] the first week of August last year … I’m clawing my way back from that, so I’m about [216 pounds] at the moment.”
Crowe, a cycling enthusiast, lost 52 pounds after filming concluded. Known for dramatically adjusting his weight for roles, the Australian actor has used weight and sword training as well as down-to-earth work on his farm to get back in shape. He also credits a focus on many protein-rich meals throughout the day.

14. Christina Aguilera
Back in her heyday of the early 2000s, Christina Aguilera was known for her svelte figure and revealing outfits. Now in her late 30s, her metabolism and unhealthy habits have caught up with her.
To combat her gradual weight gain, she lost a whopping 49 pounds a few years ago by following a balanced diet. Gone are the days of chocolate chip pancakes and corned beef, AOL says. Now she enjoys fresh veggies and lean proteins to help keep her energy levels high and her weight low.

15. Mama June
June Shannon, better known as Mama June, is well-established in the reality TV business due to her first show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which aired from 2012 to 2014. You probably remember June for her robust figure, but Women’s Health reports she went from 460 pounds to a size 4 (and WE tv documented it). And she did this the old fashioned way — by watching her diet and ditching all the soda she used to drink.
Mama June also has a sweet tooth, and her trainer recommends eating watermelon to satisfy those cravings. And as far as the soda is concerned she drinks Propel-flavored water as a low-calorie swap.

16. Jennifer Hudson
You may remember Jennifer Hudson from her first appearance on American Idol over 10 years ago. But since then, she’s dropped over 80 pounds — and managed to keep it off all this time.
So, what’s her secret? ABC News says Hudson watches her diet (remember — she was a Weight Watchers spokesperson for several years) and doesn’t give in to the temptation of comfort foods. She does always have chocolate on hand, though, as this is her one vice to keep her sane.

17. Melissa Joan Hart
Some stars’ health goals become their moneymakers. Melissa Joan Hart, most famous for her role on Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, lost 40 pounds while representing Nutrisystem, a weight loss program.
The mother of three prioritizes parenting first, and let’s her health goals fall into place after that. “For me, it was important to bond with my child, as opposed to ‘lose the weight,'” Hart told Entertainment Tonight.

18. Khloe Kardashian
You probably remember Khloe as being slightly bigger than her sisters a few years back, but those days are long gone. Entertainment Tonight says this Kardashian lost 40 pounds overall, and she did it by making nutrition and fitness a priority after her painful divorce. “By keeping positive about your body, your inner health, your mental sanity, your fitness, and what you’re trying to achieve, you’re way more likely to succeed,” she said.

19. Sam Smith
This pop singer started losing weight back in 2015, and he keeps getting slimmer and slimmer every time we see him. Sam Smith lost nearly 50 pounds that year (and 14 of those pounds in just two weeks), says Express Newspapers. To accomplish this, he cut out dairy, gluten, and refined sugar from his diet, and ate herb-infused ice cubes as a snack. Smith also added weight training and yoga to his regimen.
