Most Americans work long hours and have plenty of other things on their plate, including raising children or time-consuming hobbies. Finding time for fitness is tough and often involves getting up early or staying up late. Exercise and sleep are both vital to our health, but some people feel like they constantly have to choose between the two.

So, which is more important: sleep or exercise? Turns out, they’re like a chicken and an egg — you really can’t have one without the other. Research has shown getting less than seven hours of sleep a night can cause you to shorten your workouts due to exhaustion, while working up a good sweat can lead to a good night’s sleep. In short, you really need both, which is why this new “fitness” class concept is so exciting.

Introducing … napercise

In 2017, a U.K.-based fitness chain introduced napercise classes, Health reports. Napercise is as amazing as it sounds: Single beds replace spin bikes. Lights dim. And participants dream.

What happens in napercise classes?

A typical napercise class begins with 15 minutes of stretching. For the next 45 minutes, you lie on your designated bed and nap. The class ends with a few more minutes of stretching. The goal is to “reinvigorate the mind, improve moods, and even burn the odd calorie,” according to the company’s website.

Obviously, this is not a heart-pumping fitness class where you can hope to torch 500 calories. However, the amount of sleep you get does affect your metabolism. Getting less than seven hours of sleep per night can slow your metabolism and make weight loss harder. So, in theory, your stretch and power nap could help you burn more calories for the rest of the day. Plus, when you’re well rested, you have more energy for a lengthy workout.

The idea of napercise classes stemmed from a startling statistic: A David Lloyd Clubs survey found “86% of parents struggle with fatigue, and 26% generally get less than five hours of sleep a night,” according to Health. Napercise was born from a need to help people, especially young parents, get a little rest.

Napercise is only available in the U.K. for now, but hopefully the U.S. will catch on soon. In the meantime, taking a midday nap can have some serious benefits. The increased alertness, improved memory, and reduced stress are reasons enough to turn off the lights and tune out the world for a little while each day.
