These Photos of Carrie Underwood Before and After Her Accident Are Still Leaving Us Confused About What Happened

When Carrie Underwood’s spokesperson announced in November 2017 that she’d been injured at home, no one really knew what exactly had happened. At first, it seemed like she’d only suffered very minor injuries.

It turned out her accident had a much greater impact on her appearance — and her life — than she initially revealed to her fans. Her first Instagram selfie since the fall (page 5) left us with a lot of questions about what’s really changed, but her first major public appearance revealed more (page 9).

In mid-November 2017, Underwood fell down the front steps of her home in Tennessee. She ended up breaking her wrist — but that wasn’t the worst of it. She later revealed that she underwent surgery to treat injuries in her face.

Underwood’s spokesperson initially told reporters that she was being treated for “non life-threatening injuries including a broken wrist and cuts and abrasions,” which made it sound like she wasn’t seriously injured.

She assured her Twitter followers “I’ll be alright” after initial reports that she’d been hurt. No one realized how serious her injuries actually were until she told more of the story a few months later.

In January 2018, Underwood shared a post on her website that went into more detail about her accident and recovery.

She told her fans, “There is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up. It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life.”

Her post revealed that recovering from her fall was still going to take a lot of time — and she admitted that she was going to look different once she fully healed.

“I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told [my husband] Mike that he had put between 40 and 50 stitches in. Now, here we are 7 weeks later and, even though I’ve had the best people helping me, I’m still healing and not quite looking the same.”

So how different does she look? Well, at least one person took a photo with her and didn’t notice any change.

In fact, Below Deck alum Adrienne Gang thought Underwood looked “great” when she saw her working out in a gym at a resort. The Bravo star spoke to Us Weekly about their encounter on Dec. 12.

I had no idea she got hurt prior to meeting her. She had a wrist brace on, but I didn’t think much of it until I saw the headlines after I posted our picture together. She looked great and seemed to be in great spirits. I didn’t notice anything amiss on her face. Simply, she looked lovely.

She and her husband posed for a selfie in support of the End It Movement, a campaign in support of human trafficking victims.

The photo features red Xs over his hand and the lower half of her face — the campaign’s symbol for change. Most of her fans were supportive of both the photo and its purpose.

Many people get plastic surgery to alter their appearances — getting rid of wrinkles, filling out their lips, and more. Sometimes, though, plastic surgeons actually help people recover from serious injuries like burns and wounds.

If Underwood really does look any different after her accident, it could be because, even if a doctor can “fix” a face, it can still change a person’s appearance forever.

Underwood’s accident may have kept her out of the public eye, but it didn’t keep her from making new music. She got fans excited by posting a photo of herself in the studio on Apr. 4, 2018, while still only revealing part of her face. Her photo didn’t include a caption, so the music she was working on remained a mystery.

Following a few more teaser posts, she finally revealed that she’d be releasing her first new single of 2018, “Cry Pretty,” on Apr. 11.

Underwood thanked Urban for having her, and admitted, “I’m still kinda shaky right now. Thank you, guys. Thank you, country radio.”

Her personal struggles in recent months may have helped fuel her musical inspiration. Underwood recently announced her upcoming new album, Cry Pretty, promising it will be some of her most creative work yet.

“At this point in my career, I feel stronger and more creative than ever,” Underwood said in a statement. “I think you can hear that in this new album. It’s emotional, it’s soulful, it’s real, and we also have some fun on there, too. I hope everyone loves it as much as I have loved making it.”
