Popular Celebrities Who Are Friends With the Royal Family

Being part of the Royal Family is basically like being a celebrity. So it’s no surprise that the royals have long been buddy-buddy with some of the most notable celebs on the planet. Here’s a look at just a few popular celebrities who have been friends with the royals over the years.

Rod Stewart

Musical greats have been befriending the Royal Family for decades now. And Prince Charles’ friendship with Rod Stewart is just one example. The two men have a long history, with Stewart serving as ambassador for Charles’ foundation, the Prince’s Trust. Stewart has also performed at a couple royal birthdays, including Charles’ 60th birthday bash in 2008.

Elton John

Sir Elton had a well-known long-standing friendship with Princess Diana. He has talked in more recent years about Diana being his confidante when both were struggling with eating disorders. The singer recently paid tribute to the late Princess of Wales on the 20th anniversary of her passing by posting a variety of pictures on social media — one of which commemorated Princess Di’s efforts alongside the singer in the fight against AIDS. His current organization, Elton John AIDS Foundation, now has support from Diana’s son, Prince Harry.

Michelle Obama

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s second son appears a lot on our list because of his many famous friends. One friend of the gregarious Prince Harry that may come as a surprise is former first lady Michelle Obama. In fact, Harry and Michelle have worked together on many ventures, most notably at his well-known Invictus Games. It is also reported that Michelle and her husband, 44th president Barack Obama, visited Harry at Kensington Palace last spring while on a trip through Europe.

David Beckham

The friendship between the soccer star and the heir to the throne has less to do with being two famous dudes, and more to do with making the world a better place. Beckham and Prince William have worked alongside each other on a few ventures such as WildAid, which speaks out against illegal animal trade. The two are also good friends outside of charity — the Beckhams even scored invites to the Royal Wedding in 2011.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham and Kate Middleton have reportedly bonded quite a bit over the years, sharing common interests like interior design and fashion. The Duchess of Cambridge even helped the former Spice Girl when it came to remodeling parts of the Beckhams’ London mansion a few years back.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

When these two actors were still a hot Hollywood item, they befriended Princess Diana at a film screening of Far and Away in 1992. Cruise was particularly vocal following Diana’s death about how dangerous the stalker-esque paparazzi can be. (The paparazzi was, of course, found negligent in the fatal car crash that ended Diana’s life.) Both Cruise and Kidman attended Diana’s funeral in 1997.

Prince Harry’s friendship with model-turned-actress Delevingne goes way back. The two have even admitted to having a joking relationship in which Delevingne will send the royal flirty texts late at night — all the texts, of course, are meant in good fun. Prince Harry has even been seen hitting the town with Delevingne and some of her friends, including actress Margot Robbie.

The younger royals really can’t get enough of the bombshell blonde pop singer. Heck, she even performed at Will and Kate’s wedding! In addition to playing other events for the Royal Family, Goulding has reportedly kept in touch with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. She is also reportedly friends with Prince Harry.

Bryan Adams

Princess Diana ran into and befriended many rock stars in her heyday, from David Bowie to Michael Jackson. She was also connected to Canadian singer Bryan Adams, although the nature of their relationship isn’t exactly clear. While some outlets believe they were just friends, Adams’ ex-girlfriend has said on record that he had an affair with the Princess of Wales shortly after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Of all of Prince Harry’s musically-inclined friends, the “You’re Beautiful” singer is the most notorious. Blunt and Prince Harry are friends from their days serving in the military together, and have remained close. They party and attend events together, and the prince was present when his buddy got married in Ibiza in 2014. Blunt has performed at a variety of royal events, and sang at Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in 2016.

Richard Branson

If you’re big time like Richard Branson, of course you’re going to have ties to the Royal Family. Years before he was knighted, the Virgin entrepreneur befriended Princess Diana and even invited her on vacation with his family. In 2017, the ostentatious mogul claimed it was his idea for Elton John to rewrite “Candle in the Wind” for Diana’s memorial.

Joan Rivers

One might not think to put Joan Rivers and Prince Charles together in the same sentence. But the Prince of Wales and the zany comedienne were actually very good friends. Rivers attended Charles’ wedding to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and performed at his lavish 60th birthday party a few years later.

Roger Federer

The tennis star actually befriended the royals by way of Kate Middleton’s sister, Pippa. Federer has since become friends with Kate and her husband Prince William, who were been spotted at Wimbledon showing the tennis phenom support. Rumor has it that Federer also challenged the Duke of Cambridge to a friendly game of table tennis — but if you watch the footage of Will’s table tennis loss to his wife Kate, you can imagine that he politely declined Federer’s offer.

The world-renowned band actually played at Kensington Palace. They headlined a concert in 2016 for Prince Harry’s charity Sentebale, a mental health initiative for children in Lesotho and Botswana that are affected by HIV. Prince Harry even jumped on stage to join the band for their finale.

Redmayne went to school with Prince William, although it is said that they haven’t kept in touch much over the years. The Oscar-winning actor and the royal did get to play a bit of catch-up back in 2015, though, when they both attended the 2015 Audi Polo Challenge.
