Popular Celebrities Who Said They Didn’t Believe in Marriage, Then Got Married Anyway

For years, George Clooney held the title of Hollywood’s Most Eligible Bachelor. And his comments that he had no desire to marry help up — until 2014, when he married lawyer Amal Alamuddin. But the Oscar-winning actor isn’t the only celebrity to swear off marriage, and then end up getting hitched.

Here are a couple other celebs who changed their minds about walking down the aisle.

Cameron Diaz

Despite a list of high-profile Hollywood romances, Diaz previously believed that monogamy and married life just wasn’t for her. “I don’t know if anyone is really naturally monogamous,” she told InStyle Magazine in 2014. Interestingly enough, she wed Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden after a whirlwind romance, and the two are still happily married.

Chastain told The Wall Street Journal she had no desire to get married when she met fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. But after years of dating, she changed her mind. “When I first met my husband, he knew that marriage wasn’t something I was interested in,” she says.  “And then as we got to know each other, the idea of marriage shifted for me.”

With how adorable he and wife Blake Lively are together, it’s hard to believe that the Deadpool star previously shunned the idea of marriage. But after his divorce from Scarlett Johansson, Reynolds opened up about never wanting to get married again. Fans and social media followers are definitely happy that he changed his mind.

A long-term relationship was fine. But walking down the aisle? The former Playboy model wasn’t into it, especially after her first marriage didn’t work out so well. Even when she dated comedian Jim Carry, McCarthy was adamant that they wouldn’t get married. She did eventually change her mind, however, and married actor Donnie Wahlberg in 2014.

After her second marriage ended, Berry swore that was the end. Then, after a long relationship and child with model Gabriel Aubry, she tried her hand at marriage once again. Her union with fellow actor Olivier Martinez was short-lived, however, and they divorced in 2016 after a three-year marriage. After her most recent dating stint, the Oscar-winning actress reportedly says she is “done with love” altogether.

“I never wanted to get married,” Brie told The New York Post, saying that her demanding acting career was more important. Clearly all that changed, since she married fellow actor Dave Franco. “Then, you know, I fell in love,” she says. “So, blah blah blah, amazing. Acting is fulfilling, but it’s also not the only thing.”

After his marriage to actress Talia Balsam ended in 1993, Clooney said he had no interest in getting married again. And despite years of having gorgeous girlfriends on his arm, the actor kept to his claim that marriage wasn’t in the cards for him. But he gave it another go in 2014, and now has two children with wife Amal Alamuddin.
