Inside Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle’s Friendship
Earlier this year, some of Meghan Markle’s closest friends gathered to celebrate her and Prince Harry’s royal wedding. And now, it looks like the duchess could be returning the favor for one of her besties, Priyanka Chopra. Will Meghan Markle be in Priyanka Chopra’s wedding to Nick Jonas? Judging by their tight-knit friendship, it’s a possibility. Speaking of relationships, Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle’s friendship goes way back before the women even knew their prince charmings.
We share a look inside Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle’s friendship, ahead.
How Priyanka and Meghan met
This year marks two years of friendship for Priyanka and Meghan. The two reportedly met at the 2016 annual ELLE Women in Television dinner and immediately hit it off. “We bonded as actors,” Priyanka told People. “We just became friends, like two girls would,” she added.
Meghan also reportedly gushed about her friendship with Priyanka to India West. “Priyanka is unbelievable,” she told the outlet. “She has become a good friend. ELLE Magazine in the U.S. hosted a dinner celebrating Women in TV, and we met that night — turns out that she really likes Suits.” She went on to explain just how easy their friendship is, stating: “And you know when you meet someone and you just ‘click’ … It was just an easy, natural progression. We’ve managed to keep in touch via email and text, and try to see each other whenever we’re both in the same town.”
Priyanka supports Meghan’s new life
Going through a big career (and life) change can be hard. Luckily, Meghan has always had her friend’s support. Before the royal wedding, Priyanka spoke out about her friend’s new fairytale life in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. “I don’t think anybody else would be able to do it the way she will,” she told the magazine. “She’s just right for it,” she added. Priyanka went on to call her friend an icon — someone both young girls and women “can look up to.”
She also gave some insight into what Meghan is like in real life “She’s normal, she’s sweet, she’s nice, she thinks about the world, wants to change it and this was even before any of this happened,” she explained. “So I do think Meghan being a part of the royal family is a big step in the direction of so many things; of women, of feminism, of diversity, or race, of the monarchy versus everyone else. It’s a beautiful step in the right direction.”
She wants Meghan to be happy
Despite being famous — and connected to royalty — Priyanka and Meghan are no different than most modern friends. Following her engagement to Prince Harry, the actress congratulated her friend on Instagram, with the caption: “Congratulations to my girl @meghanmarkle and Prince Harry!! I’m so happy for you Meg! You deserve the best always..keep smiling that infectious smile. Xoxo.”
Following the royal couple’s wedding — which she of course attended — Priyanka took to social media once again to praise her friend. “Every once in a while there is a moment when time stands still … that happened today. You my friend were the epitome of grace, love, and beauty. Every choice made at this wedding by you both will go down in history, not just because it was your wedding, but because this incredible wedding stood for change and hope … both things that the world needs desperately,” she wrote. “Thank you for being the perfect picture of all things good. Seeing your union and love blessed in front of my eyes made me so happy … and tear up! I wish you both love happiness and togetherness always,” she concluded.
They’re both feminists and humanitarians
Speaking of feminism, it’s one of the things Priyanka and Meghan have in common. The duchess and actress both advocated for women and also participated in a variety of humanitarian work long before Meghan married Harry. In fact, Priyanka has spoken out against how the media portrayed Meghan as just Harry’s significant other.
After Meghan appeared on the October 2017 cover of Vanity Fair, her friend had opinions of the interview. “I mean, she’s on the cover of Vanity Fair. It would have been nice to write about her not just her boyfriend,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m just saying. I mean, she’s an actor, she’s an activist, she’s a philanthropist. I mean, she does so much more, “ she continued. “It’s just a little sexist Look, I’m a feminist and I love boys, OK … The only thing I’m saying is that there needs to be a certain sense of equality where a woman is not just a plus-one, you know. It’s nice to be your own identity, too.” With a friend like Priyanka in her corner, Meghan will be just fine in her new life.
