Revealing Insights Into Meghan Markle’s Relationship With the Royal Family

In the weeks leading up to the royal wedding, there was a lot of focus on Meghan Markle’s relationship with her family. So much focus, even, that the look at how she’s bonding with her in-laws took a back seat. But now that the Duchess of Sussex is an official member of the royal family, we can take a better look at how she’s getting along with Prince Harry’s immediate relatives.

Here’s some revealing insight into Meghan’s growing relationship with the royal family. (Don’t miss out on how she has changed the relationship between Prince Harry and his father on page 12!)

Cousin Beatrice

It’s no secret that Prince William and Kate Middleton have a strained relationship with Will’s cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. (Kate and Beatrice have a long-standing feud that doesn’t seem to go away.) There were rumors that Beatrice’s beef had extended to Meghan because the new royal was getting more jobs and more attention — which stems from the royal family’s fight for the throne, but that’s a whole other story. Nevertheless, both of the York girls were present at Harry and Meghan’s wedding.

Rumors ran rampant ahead of the royal wedding insisting Princess Eugenie and Meghan Markle were at odds. Eugenie was reportedly unhappy that she had to push back her wedding to London socialite Jack Brooksbank since both couples were scheduled to be married at St. George’s Chapel. There was also word that Eugenie was starting a feud with Harry and Meghan by asking Harry’s ex-girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, to be one of her bridesmaids. (However Bonas was a guest at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, so it’s unlikely that would cause too much friction.)

Mother-in-law Camilla

You literally can’t talk about drama in the royal family with mentioning Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Charles’ second wife has been linked to scandals in the Windsor household for years. She was even rumored to have fed the press with false stories about Kate Middleton because she thought Kate was “too common” to marry Prince William. (Clearly, that plan didn’t work out so well.) Meghan has made it her mission to get along with Prince Harry’s father and step-mom —  more on Prince Charles in just a bit — and was even seen holding hands with Camilla. That being said, Camilla openly said after the royal wedding she expected there to be drama because of Meghan’s family members who were not invited to the wedding.

The queen

Perhaps it does come as a big surprise that Queen Elizabeth is a fan of Meghan. (Heck, the monarch did have to give the okay before Prince Harry could propose to her.) In her first interview after Harry proposed, Meghan revealed that she saw the queen on a couple occasions ahead of the engagement. “I think to be able to meet her through (Harry’s) lens,” she says, “not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me.”

The corgis

It’s well known that Meghan is an avid animal lover and has a few dogs of her own. (She sadly had to leave one of her pooches in Canada when she moved to London to live with Harry.) So perhaps it was no surprise that Queen Elizabeth’s beloved corgis took to her right away. Prince Harry joked in their post-engagement interview that his grandmother’s dogs have barked at him for years, but instantly took to Meghan.

The Duke of Edinburgh is revered as being a very cool customer. But the Duchess of Sussex found a way to win her grandfather-in-law over. “Rather than simply discussing the royal family she is marrying into, Meghan chose to quiz Prince Philip on his own personal background,” the Express reports. A royal family source adds: “The reason he liked her was because she was very bold.” It’s certainly nice to see that Prince Philip likes both his granddaughters-in-law so much.

Prince Harry and his older brother have reportedly always had a very close relationship. So it’s only fitting that Meghan gets along with Prince William in order for everything to be harmonious, right? Like with wife Kate Middleton, Prince William’s relationship with his new sister-in-law has been heavily scrutinized. (Body language experts have even tried dissecting their public mannerisms to get an idea of how they get along!) While Will and Meghan may not have the intense sibling-like connection that Harry has with Kate, the two appear to get along just swimmingly.

Meeting Prince Charles

Of all the feuding within the royal family, the relationship between Prince Charles and his sons is one of the most talked-about. The Prince of Wales and heir to the throne brought the two princes up on his own after the death of their mother, Princess Diana, in 1997. Over the course of that time, it was rumored that the relationship between Charles and his sons went through long periods of strain. But none of that seemed to phase Meghan Markle, who reportedly went into meeting Prince Charles with an open mind and was instantly charmed by him.

Royal watchers speculated that Prince Charles walked Meghan part-way down the aisle at her wedding because her father was absent due to a medical emergency. Really, Charles’ presence was a show of the bond they are building. “Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day,” a Kensington Palace statement reads. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to the Royal Family in this way.”

Repairing the relationship

According to a Daily Mail report, Meghan had a hand in repairing the relationship between Charles and his two sons. There was reportedly fallout among the Wales men after Charles was visibly absent from festivities honoring the life of Princess Diana. Nevertheless, Meghan allegedly told Harry after meeting Prince Charles that she wanted the two to be closer. “‘She made it clear that (Harry) should appreciate him and bond more,” a source told the publication. And reportedly, Prince William has followed suit and begun repairing ties with his father as well.

Conflicting stories about the Meghan Markle – Kate Middleton dynamic have been swirling for months. But according to the Duchess of Sussex’s post-engagement interview, she and the Duchess of Cambridge get along very well. The two also reportedly had secret get-togethers leading up to the wedding — which is convenient, since princes William and Harry are neighbors on the Kensington Palace grounds and can see each other without the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

How Kate can help Meghan

Meghan reportedly got some help from sister-in-late Kate while was prepping to be part of the royal family. And we aren’t just talking about wedding planning either. From etiquette training to attending social events, Duchess Catherine has allegedly been there to help Meghan get acclimated. This is fortunate for Meghan, given that Kate knows plenty about the pressures of being a new royal — whether it’s dealing with public scrutiny or with the drama within the royal family itself.

Meghan’s even friends with Pippa

As if it wasn’t enough for Meghan and Kate to get along. Meghan also reportedly gets along well with Kate’s sister. Meghan was Harry’s reception date at Pippa’s wedding to James Matthews, so perhaps it’s not too surprising that they were seen at Harry and Meghan’s wedding as well. (Although Matthews and Middleton, who is pregnant with her first child, didn’t stay for the afterparty.)

Getting to know George and Charlotte

Prince Harry reportedly has a very close relationship with his niece and nephew, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Heck, they stole the show at their uncle’s wedding on May 19! But how they get along with new auntie Meghan is still a bit of a mystery. “While Meghan Markle’s relationship with the royal kids seems amicable, little is actually known,” Romper confirms. Since the Cambridge and Sussex clans live so close to each other there’s no doubt that Meghan is getting plenty of opportunities to get better acquainted with her niece and nephew.
