Joe Biden was caught chatting with a man outside of a theater in Washington D.C., but no one is sure what was discussed between the two. All that the pictures tell us is that Joe wrote something down on paper and gave it to the man. The man in question appears to be homeless, but no one can confirm that either.

Regardless of the conversation between the two, Joe still showed strong fortitude of character. He was not afraid to talk to this man as though they were equals; which is the truest form of our democracy that we are all created equal. Most people in the U.S. turn a blind eye and ignore our ever growing homelessness problem.

Some have wondered how other politicians would have treated a stranger like that. Could you imagine Donald Trump or Mike pence walking up to a homeless person? They aren’t exactly the symbols of piety or charity. Other politicians have done similar things for complete strangers though. Like when Cory Booker ran into a burning house to save a woman from a fire.

While this story is very good in this single instance, it does bring to light an ever growing problem in our society. More and more people are becoming homeless my the minute. “Almost 60,000 families with children (57,971) are homeless on any given night in the United States, according to the 2017 federal Point-in-Time count.” according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

The causes for high rates of homelessness across the United States is attributed to a myriad of issues. One of which is the Opioid epidemic. Another cause could be attributed to the lack of proper assistance from shelters or other social safety nets. Mental illness, domestic abuse, and unemployment are also drivers of the homelessness population.

Next: There is a solution, but no one will support it except the people who have seen it work.

Solution: House the homeless

The most obvious solution to the homeless problem is to put them in homes. Most people see that as a handout and doesn’t solve the problem, but the towns that have done it have eradicated their homelessness problem and created successful people out of those housing first initiatives. Other initiatives are being looked at, but a lot of them don’t really attack the source of the problem.
