Going from everyday gal to part of the royal family is a massive undertaking — one that American-born actress Meghan Markle is experiencing first hand. Lucky for her, she can get help along the way from her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. The Suits star and the Duchess of Cambridge have reportedly become very good friends. Here is a little insight into their bond.
Kate is ‘paying it forward’
It wasn’t all that long ago that Kate was the “commoner” making the big jump to join the royal family. To make her transition smoother, she received guidance from Prince William’s cousin Sophie, Countess of Wessex. (The two have reportedly been close ever since.) Now, Duchess Catherine can be a mentor for Meghan as she prepares to wed Prince Harry.
Having similar interests doesn’t hurt
Both ladies have plenty to bond over, especially since they are both incredibly involved in philanthropic work. Kate is part of The Royal Foundation with Princes William and Harry, and does a ton of work with youth outreach and mental illness. Meghan is also incredibly philanthropic, serving as a U.N. women’s advocate and an ambassador for World Vision.
Both share a penchant for privacy
If there is one thing that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made clear about their relationship, it’s that they prefer a certain level of privacy. Fortunately, they have Prince William and Kate as glowing examples of this. Both couples express a desire to get out of the spotlight, opting for quiet date nights in and escapes from the hustle and bustle of London.
Dealing with family pressure …
Pressure from the rest of the royal family must be overwhelming for a foreigner. (Heck, those royals can be gossipy and mean!) But Meghan is in good hands having Kate as a confidante. After all, Kate knows all too well what it’s like when the rest of The Firm thinks you’re “too common” to marry a prince.
… and media pressure
Following the royal wedding in 2011, the masses became obsessed with everything Kate wore, said, and did. Which makes her the perfect mentor for Meghan, who admitted in an interview that she is still trying to get comfortable with being able to fly under the radar anymore.
Who better to help with the princess’ training?
Before she could marry Prince Harry and become part of the family, Meghan had to undergo etiquette lessons. (The tabloids had a field day criticizing her mannerisms.) Meghan reportedly got her “princess training” privately and from within the royal family. And who better to help her out than Kate?
They’re great neighbors
Prior to his engagement, Prince Harry lived in an apartment at Kensington Palace, in close proximity to his brother and sister-in-law. Now that they’re married, he and Meghan moved into a cottage on the palace grounds, remaining close to William and Kate. Since Kate and Meghan have formed a close bond, we’re sure they are enjoying being neighbors.
