Robin Thicke Fell in Love With Paula Patton at Age 14, Over 20 Years Later This Is What Actually Destroyed Their Relationship
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton were once Hollywood’s sweethearts. Despite both being celebrities, their love story sounds like one from a small suburban town. They met as teenagers, and from that point on, they seemed inseparable.
However, their eventual split proved that even the happiest of celebrity relationships can be destroyed. Here’s how their relationship evolved over the years, leading up to the No. 1 thing that ruined their marriage for good (page 7).
1. They met as teenagers at a dance club
Thicke and Patton met at an all-ages dance club when they were just 14 and 15, respectively, in 1991. Patton told E!, “He asked me to dance and the rest is history.”
Thicke recalled their first moments of meeting each other, as well. He serenaded Patton by singing Stevie Wonder’s “Jungle Fever” while dancing — a move that clearly worked to win her over. “I knew she was special the night I met her,” Thicke admitted. “I was only 14, but she was already the most special girl.”

2. They gushed about each other over the years
From the time Thicke and Patton met, it seemed like they would be together forever. They married in June 2005, and had their son, Julian, on Apr. 6, 2010.
Over the course of their happy relationship, the two have gushed about each other to the media. Patton once told Women’s Health, “He makes me feel beautiful. That’s the best thing about having a partner — there is someone to tell you, ‘Stop it. You look great!’ Of course, he can’t say anything else — he’s been trained.”
Next: Patton stuck by him through this controversy.
3. Thicke’s success grew with ‘Blurred Lines’
The couple has been in Hollywood for what seems like forever, but the release of Thicke’s 2013 hit with Pharrell, “Blurred Lines,” took his fame to the next level. Suddenly, Thicke and Patton were on everyone’s radar — but not for the best reasons.
Many saw the lyrics from the song, which were inspired by Patton, as sexist or misogynistic. Thicke told BBC Newsbeat, “I don’t think people got it.” He explained, “I wrote it about my wife … she’s my good girl. And I know she wants it because we’ve been together for 20 years.”
Thicke received even more criticism for his infamously risqué performance of the song at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards with Miley Cyrus. Patton, however, didn’t see any problem with it. She told E! News, “It’s just so funny because when I saw him perform I was like, ‘You guys killed it!’ We hugged each other, we went out, celebrated. The next day, my cell phone [has] all these texts: ‘Praying for you.’ ‘If you need to talk, I’m here.'”

4. Cheating rumors began to surface
As Patton continued defending her husband in public, some cheating rumors involving Thicke began surfacing. In fall 2013, a photo was released of his hand on the bottom of another woman at a party.
Thicke gave a vague explanation for his behavior in an interview with Star. “My only comment about the so-called scandalous photo would be that my wife and I are perfectly in love and very happily married,” he said. “So, no complaints there.”
He also referred to their relationship as “the greatest love of the century and the most functional dysfunctional marriage in Hollywood.”

5. Thicke tried calming the waters
After Thicke’s questionable behavior (and controversial explanation), he sat down with Oprah Winfrey in October 2013 to sort things out. He described what he meant by his “functional dysfunctional” comment.
“That was just meaning we’re no different than any couple out there, that we have our fights and our problems,” he explained, “but somehow there is this big bang theory that just pulls us close to each other — and we are madly in love, and can’t quit each other.”
He added, “I still have the girl. I would be lost without her … [Fame] is a lot and there are girls throwing themselves at you and you can really lose touch with any sense of reality when you’re a big rock star kind of thing.”
Next: It didn’t take much longer for their relationship to go south.
6. Their relationship took a turn
In February 2014, Patton and Thicke shared the news that they decided to call it quits. They said in a joint statement, “We will always love each other and be best friends; however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.”
They kept it civil for quite some time, making sure to prioritize their son and remain a family. Thicke even tried winning Patton back by dedicating a performance of “Lost Without U” to her in concert.
He told People, “She loved it. She thought it was the sweetest thing and very romantic, and I’ve always been a romantic guy that way.”
He even wrote an entire studio album about their breakup, naming it Paula, but it wasn’t exactly well-received. He told Hot 97, “The album is exactly what happens when you lose the love of your life and you’re trying to figure it out in your head.”

7. Thicke’s success got to his head
Possibly as an added attempt to win Patton back, he publicly admitted to being the reason they’d separated. He told Hot 97, “We’re apart because we just couldn’t be together anymore for a while,” he said. “There’s a hundred different reasons, there isn’t just one. There’s a long list … I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy, and little too full of myself.”
He ended up letting his success get to his head, which is exactly what he told Oprah he wouldn’t do.
Next: Things were no longer civil between them.
8. A nasty custody battle began
Thicke and Patton may have remained civil after their split, but that was no longer the case once Patton filed an emergency order to keep Thicke from visiting their son in January 2017. According to E! News,”The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services was investigating claims that Thicke had been physically abusive toward Julian.”
In his court documents, Thick explained, “On a very rare occasion and only as a last resort, I will use light spanking, but it is consistent with the law — open hand on the butt. This is the type of discipline to which Paula and I agreed during our marriage.”
Patton had even claimed Thicke “physically abused and cheated on her during their marriage,” according to People. She was given temporary sole custody of Julian, while the judge issued a temporary restraining order against Thicke.
After seven months, Thicke and Patton put their custody battle to rest. In August 2017, People reported that they agreed to an arrangement with alternating physical custody.

9. Thicke has officially moved on
It’s safe to say Thicke has since moved on from Patton. He’s now in a relationship with April Love Geary, who he welcomed a new child with in February 2018, named Mia Love Thicke.
Geary made the announcement of her pregnancy on Instagram, sharing that their baby’s due date was the same day as Thicke’s father’s birthday. His father, Alan Thicke, passed away in December 2016.
She wrote, “Robin and I are very excited to share with you all that we’re having a baby! The due date is March 1st, Alan’s birthday!”
