Royal Family Secrets Reveal Prince Harry’s Fascinating Transformation From Party Boy to Royal Do-Gooder
These days, Prince Harry is the “it” member of the royal family. In addition to his successful charity efforts, the red-headed royal is newly married to American former actress Meghan Markle. But it’s hard to forget that, for most of his life, Harry was the resident troublemaker in the monarchy. What makes this change in character even more fascinating is what took place behind the scenes. Here is the backstory behind Prince Harry’s metamorphosis from party animal to upstanding heir to the throne.
Although he was always a ‘bad boy ‘…
Prince Harry allegedly always had a knack for getting into trouble. His mother, the late Princess Diana, wrote in letters to a friend that her young son was up to no good at school. “The boys are well and are enjoying boarding school a lot, although Harry is constantly in trouble!” she said her eight-year-old son. This was just the start of Harry cultivating his bad boy image.
… things really got bad after Diana died
What many people don’t know is that a lot of Prince Harry’s bad behavior through his teens and 20s was a result of him grieving over losing his mother at a young age. To conceal his pain after Diana’s death, Prince Harry began drinking heavily and partying hard in his teens.
Dangerous drinking and controversial costumes
Prince Harry’s behavior really took a dive in his 20s, when he seemed to embarrass the royal family on a monthly basis. His highlight reel of bad behavior includes snorting vodka in Namibia, stripping naked in Las Vegas, and dressing as a Nazi for a friend’s dinner party. Harry’s partying and poor choices were so extreme, that one radio host decided to give up alcohol altogether after partying with Harry.
The turning point, and William’s role
It seemed like, almost out of nowhere, Prince Harry turned a corner and got his life together. It wasn’t until 2017 that he revealed that he went to therapy in his late 20s to help him properly process his mother’s death. He reportedly had help from his older brother, Prince William, in making the decision to get help.
Trying his hand at charity
Sure, all the of the royal family takes part in charitable work. But Harry’s knack for philanthropy clearly comes from his mother taking him to impoverished places when he was a kid. In addition to charitable tours around the world, he is also a huge advocate for veterans after serving in the British Army for a decade. One of his biggest achievements is the Invictus Games, an international sporting event for wounded and injured service men and women.
Very charitable friends …
It doesn’t hurt that Prince Harry also started breaking bread with other do-gooders instead of shot-takers. In addition to sharing charitable duties with his brother and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, he has worked closely with former first lady Michelle Obama. They have worked so closely in their outreach even, that the Obamas were rumored to be invitees to Harry’s wedding. While we’re on the subject of the wedding…
… and a philanthropic wife
It’s only fitting that Harry’s bride, Meghan Markle, is quite the philanthropist herself. The former UN ambassador plans to embark on many more charitable endeavors now that she and Harry are married. It’s only a wonder how many events they will end up hosting together.
