But the adorable couple surprised everyone when they announced that they are inviting members of the public to their highly-anticipated nuptials.

Why do they want to invite the public?
Royal weddings are exclusive events, no doubt. But being that Prince Harry is a more modern royal, he and his fiance wanted more people to feel included. “Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have said they want their wedding day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too,” the statement from Kensington Palace says.

When we say that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to invite members of the public, we aren’t just talking about 10-20 people. This part of the couple’s guest list reportedly includes over 2,600 guests, according to The Washington Post.

Who got to choose who was invited?
Kensington Palace reveals on Twitter the soon-to-be newlyweds “asked Lord Lieutenants to invite 1,200 people to join the celebrations, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.” The palace Twitter feed then included a couple bios of the special invitees.

The Telegraph informs us the younger set of wedding guests will include “100 pupils from two local schools, The Royal School and St George’s School, both of which have a strong affiliation with the Windsor Castle community.” A couple students were included in the bios posted to the Kensington Palace Twitter feed.

Who made up the other invites?
Those close to the royal family got to the guest list as well. The Telegraph reports the royal couple has invited “530 members of staff from the Royal Household and Crown Estate, and 610 people from the Windsor Castle community.”

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Prince Harry is including people connected to his charity efforts on the guest list. These 200 guests include “staff from the Invictus Games, veterans, mental health charities, HIV awareness campaigns and seriously ill children,” the Telegraph says.

How close can the public get?
The members of the public on the royal wedding guest list aren’t exactly going to be sitting within St. George’s Chapel. These guests will be welcomed onto the Windsor Castle grounds outside of the chapel so they can get an up-close look at the couple as they enter and exit. They will get another glimpse as the bride and groom take a carriage ride through Windsor town center to wave at everyone, The Washington Post says.
