The Secrets Behind Who Might Walk Meghan Markle Down the Aisle, Revealed

Meghan Markle has been in the news daily since her engagement to Prince Harry. The couple plan to tie the knot in May 2018. While Markle will be bringing a few new traditions to her royal wedding, one classic tradition might also be broken. Reports have surfaced that Markle might not ask her father to walk her down the aisle. The two haven’t always had a very close relationship, and someone else might be in the running for aisle duty (check out page 4).

She already plans to bring in some ‘different’ traditions

Markle is American, and with her engagement to Prince Harry come some American traditions. The “maid of honor” role is not celebrated in England. Markle will likely have a maid of honor, although she has not yet said who it will be. Also, bridal showers are not popular in England, among other American traditions. Since Markle was brought up American, she will likely have a bridal shower (maybe it will be here in the states?). It’s tough to say yet whether or not she’ll bring other United States’ traditions across the pond, such as the rehearsal dinner and a shorter reception. However, it is clear that she is not playing by the royal rules — so why not switch things up down the aisle, too?

Markle’s father has been described as a ‘recluse’

While it’s traditional for the bride’s father to give her away, Markle’s dad is shy about the spotlight. Perhaps the idea of the royal wedding is too much for him, and he doesn’t have any interest.  “Dad never liked the limelight, but since the news came out about Meghan and Harry he’s become a total recluse,” Markle’s half-brother, Tom Markle, told the Daily Mail. Business Insider reported that Markle’s father lives in an isolated cliff top house in Mexico.

Markle and her father have always gotten along, but they have not always had a typical father-daughter relationship. While Markle does credit her father for inspiring her career, she’s always been far closer with her mother. After Markle’s parents divorced when she was six, she lived with her mother. When Prince Harry asked permission to propose, he asked her mother. In fact, Markle’s father has not yet met his daughter’s future husband.

Sources say her mother might walk her down the aisle

In early 2018, E! Online reported that Markle might break a huge wedding tradition by having her father walk her down the aisle. A source reported to E! that Markle would rather have her mother, Doria, walk her instead. The two have been close since the divorce. Her father does not come around very often, and perhaps Markle feels like he isn’t a big enough part of her life anymore to receive such a huge wedding duty. However, Markle has not yet confirmed which parent will have the honor.

… but other family members are denying that story

In a recent interview, Markle’s sister, Samantha Grant, denied rumors that Markle’s mother would walk her down the aisle. Grant claimed that “unless the plane crashes” Thomas Markle will be the one to give his daughter away. However, Grant is also in the midst of releasing a book about what it’s like to be Markle’s sister. It seems like the two don’t have a close relationship, so it’s tough to say if Grant’s words about Markle’s wedding can be trusted.

Her father took a long time to comment on the engagement

When Markle and Prince Harry first announced their engagement, her parents released a joint statement. They expressed how happy they were for the couple. However, that seemed to be all her father had to say. He didn’t make another comment on the engagement news until reporters tracked him down in a Mexican convenience store. “I’m very happy for them, Meghan and Harry. I love my daughter very much … Now leave me alone,” he said. While there is no doubt Markle’s father loves her, his reclusiveness after the announcement made reporters wonder if he’s fit for the role of “father of the bride.”

Her siblings haven’t always been happy with the royal family

Regardless of her parents’ kind words about the engagement, Markle’s half brother and sister have undecided views on the royal family. Recently, Harry came under fire for saying his family was the family Markle never had. Markle’s half siblings were quick to assure the public that Markle had an extremely loving family growing up. They reacted by saying Harry’s words were out of line. Markle and her brother have always had a close relationship, but her estranged sister has been out of her life for a little while now. It’s true that Markle’s family may not be as traditional as the royal family, but all of them are quick to talk about how much they love the bride to be.
