Celebrities are not immune to weight gain. Whether it’s stress, aging, or gaining for a film, Hollywood has its share of stars who have let themselves go for one reason or another. Here are the celebs we’ve seen gain — and sometimes shed — serious pounds through the years.
Attitude Magazine recently quoted the Season 1 American Idol winner as saying, “When I was really skinny and unhappy, I wanted to kill myself.” Clarkson since refuted that quote, saying she was never suicidal about her weight. Though she has gained a few pounds since her 2002 debut, Clarkson says she is proud of who she is, recently telling Billboard that “happy looks different on everyone.”

Simpson gained an estimated 40-60 pounds during her pregnancy with daughter Maxwell Drew. Now, she’s expanded her clothing line to make sure it fits women of all sizes. It wasn’t easy for Simpson to shed the baby weight, and now she’s more confident than ever in her healthy look — a far cry from the 98 pounds she weighed when filming The Dukes of Hazard in 2005.

Leto gained an unimaginable 67 pounds for his role in Biopic, and the actor said he would never do it again. “Really, it’s a stupid thing to do,” he told The Guardian in 2014. Leto said his cholesterol went up so quickly, his doctors considered putting him on intense medications.

Primarily known for his role in the Terminator films, Schwarzenegger also made headlines when he became California’s 38th governor. Since his professional bodybuilding days, Schwarzenegger has let his perfect physique slip away — possibly because he’s now 70.

We’ve seen Winfrey on television since what feels like the beginning of time — her talk show first premiered in 1986. We’ve also seen her weight triumph and struggle through the years. Now, this influential woman embraces her body and has become a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers, where she repeatedly enforces how she will never give up bread. Neither will we.

Robert De Niro
Perhaps the most famous film weight gain of all time came from De Niro’s role in Raging Bull, where he gained a whopping 60 pounds to play aging boxer Jake LaMotta. Rumor has it that De Niro was sent to Italy to indulge in as much pasta as possible in order to pack on the pounds.

Some think Baldwin’s 2015 weight gain stemmed from drama with his daughter, Ireland, who entered rehab for emotional trauma the same year. Baldwin, famous for films like The Hunt for Red October and The Departed, seems to have dropped some of that weight and looks much slimmer in his well-liked role as Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

Travolta struggled greatly with his weight in the early 2000s. The Saturday Night Fever star let his weight get out of control about 10 years ago, but managed to shed all those pounds a few years later to get back down to a slim and comfortable weight. She made her toned and tiny debut at her sold out concert at the Hollywood Bowl in October.

In another case of weight gain for a movie role, Damon had to gain 30 pounds for his role in the 2009 film The Informant!. He credited McDonald’s, Doritos and dark beer for helping him quickly pack on the pounds.

The infamous incident occurred in 2007 — Tyra Banks told everyone to “kiss my fat a**” on the set of her talk show after unflattering photos of her on the beach surfaced. The former America’s Next Top Model host is no longer a size 2, but she never let the criticism from her weight gain stop her. She looked flawless holding her new baby in January 2016.

Kirstie Alley, like Oprah Winfrey, has battled with weight gain and loss frequently over the years. After parting ways with Jenny Craig in 2007, which helped her lose about 75 pounds, Alley told People she once again gained a staggering 83 pounds. She worked hard to shed about 50 pounds, and told People in a January interview that avoiding “trigger foods” helps her keep the weight off.

Love the Kardashians or hate them, we’ve all heard about Rob’s intense weight gain over the years. The youngest of the Kardashians, Rob has dealt with depression through the years and most recently heartbreak after his split from Blac Chyna. His weight has only worsened. He briefly lost about 50 pounds when the two started dating, but he gained the weight back after their split. Sources told TMZ in October that Kardashian is determined to shed the weight and get his life back.

Anna Nicole Smith
Although we lost this former Playboy model 10 years ago, Smith’s weight was always looked at as one of the most extreme cases of weight gain and weight loss in Hollywood. Smith’s weight reportedly fluctuated from 140 pounds to 224 pounds between 1992 and 1996, then again from 138 pounds to 200 pounds from 1997 to 2002. Smith lost about 80 pounds once again, before she died of a drug overdose in 2007.
