How to Stay Motivated to Exercise This Fall

With the changing of the leaves, cool temps, and Halloween in the near distance, ’tis the season for chunky sweaters, comfy jeans, and football-viewing parties galore. For some, fall officially kicks off when the first NFL whistle of the season blows. For others, it promptly begins with the first pumpkin spice latte. But, for most, it also means more time indoors, and less of a desire to work up a good sweat.

While the threats of beer bellies and lazy fall weekends are a very, very real thing, don’t get discouraged. We’re here to help you figure out just how to overcome common autumn temptations. If you’ve fallen out of step with your workout routine, here’s how to stay motivated for some fall exercise.

Bribe yourself

Sound a little counter-intuitive? Well, it may be, but it’s still on our list. Women’s Health suggests bribing yourself with something you’re sure to enjoy post workout. And we agree, this is a great idea. Don’t be afraid to reward yourself with some beverages and football fare after you’ve hit the gym. Although you might be hesitant to do so, it’ll have you motivated to finish your workout with enthusiasm. And while rewarding yourself with something non food-related may be a healthier option, if you’re a person who’s going to crush beers and down wings every Sunday of the season anyway, it’s far better to at least have some exercise under your belt beforehand. That being said, practice a little bit of portion control.

Treat yourself to new gear

It can be challenging to motivate yourself to exercise as the temperatures begin to drop, so you’d better make sure you have all the necessary gear. If you’re worried about being being cold put a little pep in your step by sprucing up your workout wardrobe. If you’re an after-work runner, you’ll need to invest in some good base layers. And why stop there? Lightweight jackets are great for running, technical shells make for wonderful climbing gear, and new hats work for just about anything. The fitness industry is your oyster, so go crazy. After all, there’s no shame in upping your style game.

Get outside

There’s nothing quite like getting outside and breathing in that crisp fall air. It won’t be long before the beautiful red and gold leaves begin to fall from the trees, so you better take it all in while you can. And what are some opportune ways to make the most of everything the season has to offer? Try your hand at mountain biking through the woods. If you’re lucky enough to live in a place where tree-lined trails are abundant, don’t miss the chance to hop on the saddle and pedal your way to biking bliss. Or, throw on your new kicks (see above) and take to a hiking spot. Nothing beats taking in the views from a scenic lookout.

Plan an adventurous trip

For those who need a serious kick in the pants, plan a trip that’s both inspiring and sweaty. If you’re looking to escape for the weekend, pick a place bound to deliver adventure, so you’ll be sure to spend the whole weekend basking in fun activities. There are plenty of adventure hub destinations worth visiting this fall, so take advantage before it’s too late.
