CBS News reports Spade left behind a note. “The contents of that note as well as the physical state of the apartment and the comments of the witness lend to the credibility that it is an apparent suicide,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said. And the note was allegedly addressed to Spade’s 13-year-old daughter.

With Spade’s death, certain family members are speaking out more than others. And her older sister, Reta Brosnahan Saffo, reached out to multiple publications to share her input.

The Kansas City Star reports Saffo said Spade “had been dealing with a debilitating mental illness for the last three or four years.” She was also reportedly self-medicating with alcohol. As for why Spade may have committed suicide, Saffo said, “I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand (KS) may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive.”

Oddly enough, Saffo reported Spade became fixated on Robin Williams’ suicide, the Kansas City Star reports. Spade was with her sister in a Santa Fe at a hotel when the news regarding Williams’ death broke, Saffo wrote. “We were freaking out/saddened, but she kept watching it and watching it over and over.”

Even more startling, Saffo admitted that she thinks Spade had suicidal ideation “as far as back then.”

Saffo’s commentary made it sound as if she and her sister were quite close. She even mentioned that she’ll miss their long talks on the phone that would last six to seven hours at a time.

Did Spade ever seek help for her alleged mental illness? According to Saffo, she tried to get her sister into a treatment center on multiple occasions. “I’d come so VERY close to getting her to go in for treatment (to the same place Catherine Zeta-Jones went for her successful bipolar treatment program),” Saffo wrote. But then, she added, “we’d get sooo close to packing her bags, but — in the end, the ‘image’ of her brand (happy-go-lucky Kate Spade) was more important for her to keep up.”

Saffo claimed Spade’s husband, Andy, also tried to assist in getting her into a treatment program.

Was Saffo as close to Spade as she claims? One source close to Spade’s family argues that with People. The source said that Saffo was actually estranged from Spade and the entire rest of her family for 10 years.

In addition, the source also added, “The family is disgusted and saddened that at this time of great sorrow, Kate’s sister … would choose to surface with unsubstantiated comments.” And they said that Saffo’s comments regarding her experience with Spade “paint a picture of someone who didn’t know her at all.”
