You’re told from a young age that it’s important to take care of your health. But that typically doesn’t sink in until you’re an adult, and changing your habits become more difficult. But if you’re in your 40s way may not have a choice, because certain health concerns become even more prevalent as you get closer to the half-century mark.

Here are the health concerns that show up in your 40s, and what you can do about it.

Eye problems

The National Eye Institute points out that eyesight absolutely changes in your 40s. Anything from dry eyes to cataracts to glaucoma can occur. In the case of someone with diabetes, complications can lead to diabetic blindness disease. The NEI recommends getting a comprehensive dilated eye test since many eye complications and diseases don’t have early warning signs.

Cancer risk

Cancer risk and awareness becomes a greater concern after the 40-year mark, according to the National Cancer Institute. But, as the National Center for Biotechnology Information points out, cancer doesn’t have to be a result of growing older. Prostate cancer risk in men and breast cancer risk in women increases, along with the risk for colon cancer skin cancer. The University of Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center recommends lifestyle changes and regular check-ups to help with prevention.

Heart health

Hypertension, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes become a greater risk as you get into your 40s. And as Global News summarizes, a Northwestern University study showed that these health issues raise your risk of heart failure in people ages 45-55. Committing to a more heart-healthy diet — no matter how hard it is to give up bacon and sweets — and getting some form of regular exercise will go a long way to helping your heart.

Cholesterol levels

The body does in fact produce more cholesterol as you age, Medical News Today explains. So the earlier someone can make lifestyle changes to keep their cholesterol at a healthy level, the better. “A sudden change in lifestyle will help eventually, but the older a person is, the less impact they will see in cholesterol levels,” the site says. That being said, keeping a close eye on your cholesterol is good at any age.

Bone mineral density

This is another part of the body that decreases with age. But it’s especially pre-menopausal women over 40 who are more susceptible to getting osteopenia, a condition where the body can’t produce new bones at thee same rate it absorbs old bones. NCBI recommends getting bone mineral density testing starting at age 40 to help catch early signs of bone loss.

Thyroid problems

You may think that fatigue and muscle weakness is just a typical part of aging. But it can also be a sign of thyroid problems — which become more of a problem after 40, especially in peri-menopausal women. But despite its wide array of symptoms — which can make it difficult to diagnose — VeryWell.com points out that there are many ways to help prevent having a thyroid problem.
