‘The Incredible Hulk’ Lou Ferrigno Reveals His Fitness Secrets

Looking for some tips on how to get that superhero bod? It might be easier than you think. In anticipation of the second annual Ferrigno Legacy Bodybuilding Weekend, the two-day event sanctioned by the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) and National Physique Committee (NPC) taking place at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. on November 20 to 21, we spoke with fitness legend, The Incredible Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno, for some insight on tips, habits, and recommendations that might help you reach that superhero-like physique.

Consistency

Maintaining that superhero physique, Ferrigno tells us, is all about consistency. Often, a common mistake is that people train too much or not enough. Train properly, don’t over-train, and be conscious of correct form while working out. Ferrigno recommends a minimum of working out three times a week for about an hour.

Balanced diet

Eating natural foods is key, so stay away from unsaturated fats, sugar, and fried food. Additionally, eat your calories; don’t drink them. For instance, if you’re having a salad, swap the blue cheese dressing for an olive oil based alternative. Avoid carbonated beverages, as well. In order to train hard, you want to put the right nutrients into your body, so be sure to get plenty of protein, veggies, and carbohydrates.

Train the whole body

Instead of focusing on one area of your body every time you’re at the gym, be sure to mix it up. If you tend to spend the majority of your gym time in the weights section, make a conscious effort to work in some cardio time, as well.

Have a training partner and stay focused

Just as you might depend on coffee to stay on task during the work week, focus is just as important while at the gym. Committing to working out consistently with a partner will not only help you stay on track, but it will probably have you looking forward to your workout sessions, too. “Don’t slack off or waste time at the gym,” Ferrigno says, “it’s all about quality, not quantity.”

Determine the right routine for you

Everyone has different genetics, and just because a certain regiment works for your buddy, that doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. Figure out what’s best for you, and only compete with yourself. Ferrigno says, “It’s all about being the best you can within your own genetic potential.”

Be passionate and have a positive attitude

Often, people become too analytical, but don’t overthink it. Create a routine for yourself that gets you excited and leaves you feeling great. Also, don’t forget to get plenty of rest. A proper amount of quality sleep is imperative to looking and feeling as healthy as you can be.
