The Most Hated Celebrity Couples of All Time
Celebrities are some of the most beloved people on the planet. They are also some of the most hated. The same can be said about celebrity couples; they either make us wish for a similar union or make us want to throw things at the wall every time we see them. And some couples, of course, are even more despised than others. Here are the top 15 most hated celebrity couples of all time. The very worst couple — who happen to have a huge age difference — may surprise you (page 10).
1. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Heck, even the tabloids wanted these two to break up. Maybe it was because Cruise had his over-the-top couching jumping moment on Oprah. or maybe it was because everyone liked ex-wife Nicole Kidman more. But despite having a child together, he and the Dawson’s Creek alum always seemed like an awkward fit for each other. Their marriage last just shy of six years — although the exhausted tabloid frenzy around them dragged on just a bit longer.

2. Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva
My, Gibson has fallen far from sanity. There are so many instances over the past couple of decades when the former-hunk has come off as a raging lunatic. One such example of this was his relationship with Russian model Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he has a daughter. The had a turbulent and often violent relationship, which ended abruptly in 2016 when Girgorieva lost out on nearly $14 million dollars in settlement money from Gibson.

3. Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin
Again, here we have a sparkling celebrity couple that appeared to be a great match. But people don’t seem to remember much about Baldwin and Basinger’s marriage in the 90s. Rather, they recall the hideous divorce and custody battle over their daughter. Surely Basinger’s battles with anxiety, mixed with Baldwin’s alcoholism — and now-infamous voicemail to his daughter — didn’t help matters. They appear to be on okay terms now, although their troubles aren’t that far in the rear-view mirror.

4. Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown
Whitney Houston’s voice and persona reigned supreme in the 80s and 90s. Which made her downward spiral during her marriage to Bobby Brown extra loathsome. Brown is viewed for being partially responsible for Houston’s drug problem, which he has since admitted was at its worst at the end of their marriage. He has also been quite vocal since the singer’s death in pinpointing would-be son-in-law Nick Gordon as responsible for the death of both Houston and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

5. Billy-Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie
This celebrity couple was founded on scandal, and went on to rub it in everyone’s faces for a long three years. After Thornton abruptly left fiancee Laura Dern for Jolie, the two began a gross parade of making out on red carpets and wearing vials of each others blood around their necks. Their split was allegedly due to Thornton not wanting any children. (Jolie went on, of course, to build a family with Brad Pitt.)

6. Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee
You can’t talk about out-of-control rock star couples without talking about these two. The union between the Motley Crue drummer and Baywatch star resulted in many infamous public disputes and an even more infamous sex tape. It also came out in later years that Lee was physically abusive to his wife.

7. Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra
How anyone has ever found Dennis Rodman attractive is a bit of a mystery. It’s extra puzzling as to what alum Baywatch Carmen Electra saw in him. Apparently, Electra looks back and wonders that same thing herself. She has gone record since the union to call it “the worst” stating that the relationship was destructive and put her in a bad place.

8. Sean Penn and Madonna
Outside of being good for a punchline, the pop star and future Oscar-winning actor were basically a derailed roller-coaster that fueled the tabloid. The tumultuous duo perpetually fought, broke up, and made back up during their four-year marriage. With rumors of Penn’s horrific temper and pension for violence, it’s a wonder they stayed together that long. Madonna and Penn are allegedly on good terms nowadays, though.

9. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
In 1990, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on the Days of Thunder set and married that year. They adopted two children as Kidman’s career grew. But Cruise’s commitment to Scientology allegedly drove a wedge between them. According to divorce papers, he abruptly left Kidman and received full custody of the children. The media still speculates the true reasons for the split, but it devastated fans nonetheless

10. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones
Sure, the union of these Hollywood heavy hitters seemed quite glamorous at first. But this was one of those celebrity couples that wore out their welcome. First was the insistence that they were the “perfect” couple that never fought. Then there were the whispers that Douglas twisted some arms to get his wife nominated during movie awards season. And then there was the brief breakup, in which Douglas blamed his cancer on Zeta-Jones. (Those comments may be too explicit for this page.) The two have reportedly mended fences — which could mean even more annoying behavior.

11. Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson
They may have seemed like a glamorous Hollywood couple. But Reynolds and Anderson endured one of the messiest breakups in recent history. So messy even, that it dragged out for over 20 years! Reynolds has gone on record to call his marriage to Anderson in the 1980s “a mistake” especially when it came to her pension to overspending money. That perhaps made it less of a surprise when was reported in 2015 that Reynolds had just paid the last bit of settlement money — from their divorce in 1994.

12. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
It’s not the biggest age difference in Hollywood, but 16 years between 25-year-old Ashton Kutcher and 41-year-old Demi Moore still freaked out many. Three years after Moore’s divorce from Bruce Willis, she met Kutcher at a dinner and they dated for two years before marrying. At first, Moore’s children were weirded out by his young age as well as the couple’s intense demonstrations of love on social media. Moore and Kutcher overshared everything — until they divorced in 2013.

13. Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart
J-Lo has had many loves in her life. Some have made more sense than others. One that made little sense, however, was her relationship with back-up dancer Casper Smart. The pop diva was fairly fresh out off her divorce from singer Marc Anthony and looked more like she needed attention from a younger man — and the paparazzi — than a healthy way to get over her failed marriage.

14. Sandra Bullock and Jesse James
Jesse James publicly came clean after several (interesting) women claimed they’d slept with him during his five-year marriage to Sandra Bullock. He checked into sex rehab to deal with issues and salvage his marriage but the Oscar-winning actress filed for divorce shortly after. Bullock went on to start her family, adopting two children on her own (including the one she and James planned to adopt together).

15. Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow
Their union barely lasted over a year. But this odd celebrity couple maintained a public and rumor-driven relationship even as Farrow went through her even more bizarre union with Woody Allen. On top of Sinatra being roughly three decades older than Farrow, he had a problem with her wanting to follow her rising career and wanted her to settle down. (A little odd, considering what a womanizing party-er he was at the time.) Sinatra callously surprised her with divorce papers while was on set filming Rosemary’s Baby. It must have been painful for Farrow — it was also painful for everyone else to watch.

16. John Lennon and Yoko Ono
In addition to adding to the Beatles’ split, Lennon’s long-standing affair with Ono is believed to have fueled his horrible drug habits. There are also reports that their relationship drove Lennon into a deep and suicidal depression. What’s worse, is that it’s also believed that Ono knew that his life was in danger ahead of his assassination, then did nothing about it. It’s no wonder Sir Paul McCartney still doesn’t like her.

17. Ike and Tina Turner
The former husband-and-wife music outfit is referenced just about any time a link is made between celebrity couples and domestic abuse. Ike Turner was violent through the couple’s 14 year marriage, although Tina did finally fight back one night before a concert in which they both emerged from their limo bloody and beaten up. She finally left him, although the megastar is reportedly still somewhat traumatized by the relationship.

18. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
And here you have them: Quite possibly the most hated celebrity couple in recent history. Both polarizing, attention-hungry, and never willing to take a day off from doing something completely insane. The fact that they are still together is, in all honesty, pretty remarkable.
