The Not-So-Romantic Way Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump Met and Fell in Love

Ivanka Trump lives a romantic life, but her first date with Jared Kushner was less swoon-worthy than her fashion line. The prominent couple is now married with three kids, but how did they reach this point? Their courtship will surprise you, especially how they describe their home life in business terms (No. 6). Let’s take a quick look at seven key details of their unusual relationship.

1. Ivanka describes their first date as a business deal

The two met through mutual friends who thought it could be a good networking opportunity; little did the commercial real estate brokers realize they’d made the biggest deal of all.

“They very innocently set us up thinking that our only interest in one another would be transactional,” said Ivanka, “Whenever we see them we’re like, The best deal we ever made!”

2. Their relationship was off-and-on for a bit

Jared and Ivanka aren’t all that different from other couples; the two constantly faced will-they-or-won’t-they rumors early on in their relationship. In the spring of 2007, the two claimed to be friends while meeting up at Bowlmor Lanes, attending parties separately (but ending up together), and dancing at concerts.

They confirmed their relationship later that year, but broke up shortly after. Jared’s mother allegedly played a role in their split, which was reportedly about religion; Jared’s family is Jewish. Ivanka converted to Judaism and the two were engaged by 2009.

According to Esquire, now-President Trump gave a miserable blunder of a speech. One of the wedding guests said he gave, “the most pathetic, lame, embarrassing speech I’ve heard in a long time.”

The POTUS told PEOPLE he offered a simple toast, stating, “Be happy and enjoy your life.” However, his track record for honesty is constantly up for debate.

According to the New York Post, the couple’s wedding invitation included a flier for “Donald’s other golf properties.” The New York Times reported that an “insert offered guests a free round of golf” at one of the Trump golf courses.

Ivanka denied this and told New York Magazine that the report of the marketing flyer was inaccurate.

“So, my husband’s idea of a date night somehow always involves me looking at one of his development sites,” Ivanka told Vogue.

The couple’s R&R time together involves work as well. Ivanka admitted that while she tries not to schedule plans on the weekend, sometimes she and Kushner will walk around the neighborhood and look at properties they own.

“I would say she is definitely the CEO of our household, whereas I’m more on the board of directors,” Kushner told Vogue about their relationship dynamic. Both choose to play an active role in their children’s lives.

“We both pick up slack for each other where it’s needed, but she doesn’t want to outsource mothering, so she’s very involved.”

Jared Kushner acts as senior advisor to President Trump and Ivanka plays an official, albeit unpaid role in Trump’s White House. Regardless of public opinion about their relationship, they’ve both received poor reviews as government employees.

While Ivanka once expressed a pro-women’s rights platform, the First Daughter has remained mainly silent as policies affecting women’s health care have crossed her father’s desk. Kushner’s transition from son-in-law to advisor hasn’t gone smoothly, Vanity Fair reports, and many are skeptical of his lack of government experience.
