The Real Reason Donald Trump Took the Time to Call Roseanne Barr on the Phone
Only a few short months ago, Donald Trump gleefully called Roseanne Barr after seeing the popularity of her show’s reboot. However, his excitement is likely to be tempered after ABC swiftly canceled the show due to Barr’s racist tweet targeting Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, according to CNN.
But why did Trump call Barr in the first place and what did they talk about (page 5 and 6)? And what is he saying now that the show was canceled (page 8)?
1. Barr is a Trump supporter in real life
Television character, Roseanne Conner is a Trump supporter, but so is the actress, Roseanne Barr, The Washington Post reports. Before the show aired, Barr tweeted her support: “4 those who wonder-back in the day when I was called a ‘liberal’ by journalists, I used to answer-‘I’m not a Liberal, I’m a radical’ & I still am-I voted Trump 2 shake up the status quo & the staid establishment.”
Since then Barr erased her social media history. She’s also been known to launch racist images, which have also been deleted.
Next: Trump is a sucker for this.
2. Flattery gets you everywhere with Trump
Trump thrives on flattery and approval, which may one reason why he’s so enamored with the Roseanne reboot. The show’s main character, Roseanne Conner, strongly voiced her support during early shows, which Trump likely sees as flattery.
Next: The show was one of the few to do this.
3. Roseanne is a rarity in Hollywood
While most television shows either poke fun or demonstrate disdain for Trump, Roseanne goes in an opposite direction. The show is one of the only highly rated programs to feature a Trump supporter, Vanity Fair reports.
Next: The combination of the character and pilot success led to this.
4. Trump likes to hang his hat on success
Trump called Barr to congratulate her on the show’s success. Of course, a number of other shows were wildly successful, but Trump likely made the call because his supporters were portrayed in a favorable light.
Next: But this is probably why he really called.
5. This is 1 of Trump’s favorite things
In the words of Trump, the show received “huge” ratings. Approximately 18 million viewers tuned in for the first show in to see what transpired with the Conner family after being off the air for nearly 20 years, ABC News reports. It’s no secret Trump loves high ratings, as he often bragged about The Apprentice ratings, Vulture reports.
Next: High ratings and a pro-Trump message was the perfect recipe.
6. When Trump saw this, he had to call
Barr knows Trump and provided this clue as to why he made a personal phone call. “I’ve known him for many years and he’s done a lot of nice things for me over the years,” Barr said, according to Time. “He really understands ratings and how they measure things.”
She added that the majority of the call was an exchange about ratings, work, and television too.
Next: Trump also said this about the show.
7. Trump backed the show during a recent rally, too
Trump rallied a crowd in Ohio saying he called Roseanne, citing her “unbelievable” ratings and that the show was “about us,” NBC News reports.
Next: Trump’s giddiness went south once Roseanne was canceled.
8. Trump lashes out at ABC
Trump was baffled when he didn’t receive an apology call from ABC about “horrible comments” made about him on the network. “Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that “ABC does not tolerate comments like those” made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call?”
