The Real Reason Nicole Kidman Never Talks About Her 2 Kids With Tom Cruise

Fans were flummoxed when Nicole Kidman only acknowledge two of her four children during her acceptance speech at the 2017 Emmy’s. What happened to Connor and Isabella Cruise and why does it appear that they have a non-existent relationship with their mother?

Although Cruise and Kidman remained in the news since their 2001 divorce, mention of their children, who are both adopted, seemed to vanish. While the children lived with Cruise, relations with their mother grew more strained through the years. Here’s what we know.

1. The children ‘chose’ to live with Cruise after the divorce

Although custody arrangements were never made public, the children remained with Cruise in Los Angeles, according to The Daily Beast. Kidman returned to Australia and rarely saw the children. Isabella said she loved her mom and that she sees and speaks with her only sometimes. Connor also said to Women’s Day: “Me and Mum are solid. I love her a lot. My family means everything…the family comes before everything else,” Daily Mail reports.

After Kidman married country singer Keith Urban, she talked about her relationship with her oldest children with Hello! magazine. “They live with Tom, which was their choice,” Vogue reports. “I’d love them to live with us, but what can you do?”

2. Kidman isn’t a Scientologist

The children were raised with their dad’s faith in the church of Scientology. Founded in the 1950s by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology is a faith where members confront life’s traumas and relive the experience to neutralize the mind to achieve clarity or a spiritual state referred to as “clear,” according to CNN.

Kidman insists Scientology did not influence her relationship with the children, saying to Vanity Fair, “I’ve chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology. I have two children who are Scientologists—Connor and Isabella—and I utterly respect their beliefs.”

When Kidman played an adoptive mother in the film, Lion she reflected upon her relationship with Isabella and Connor. “I can see now, for Lion, that it was important to me because I’m a mother with adopted children,” she said to Town and Country. “This movie is a love letter to my children.”

She went further by comparing the character’s love of her adoptive son to what she feels for her own children. “Sue is deeply maternal and full of unconditional love, which is beautiful,” Kidman said. “That’s why I wanted to do it. I relate to that. I feel that for my own children who are adopted. It’s not about anything else other than ‘I wanted you.’ It’s that deep and personal, and whatever your journey is, I’m here to love and support you. That’s what I connected to.”

When Cruise married actress Katie Holmes, former Scientologist Leah Remini shared her observations about Isabella Cruise’s attitude toward her mother in her book. Remini asked Isabella if she’d seen her mother and she responded, “Not if I have a choice. Our mom is a f*****g SP,” Daily Mail reports. SP in Scientologist speak means Suppressive Person or an enemy of the church.

Cruise not only approved of the union, but also paid for Isabella’s Scientology wedding to IT consultant Max Parker in London. Although Cruise was not in attendance, Kidman didn’t know Isabella was getting married, Daily Mail reports. After the nuptials, Kidman reportedly said she was ‘very happy’ about the news.

The couple had a Scientology-based wedding, but Max is not a reported member of the church.

Today Kidman lives in Australia with her husband and two daughters, while Isabella is in London and Connor moved to Florida. Connor is now 23-years-old and acted in films like Red Dawn and Seven Pounds.

Isabella is 25-years-old and recently started a new clothing line with this silver lining: her line is called BKC,  Bella Kidman Cruise, according to Daily Mail. For Kidman, when she recently accepted a Best Actress Critic’s Choice Award for Big Little Lies, she thanked all her children this time. “I want to thank all of my children who show me so much love,” she said.
