The Real Reason People Are Hating on the Dress Priyanka Chopra Wore to the Royal Wedding

Fashion was, of course, one main topic of discussion at the royal wedding. From notable guests to the bride herself, every ensemble has been scrutinized. One guest, in particular, has garnered a fair amount of attention for her choice of dress: Actress Priyanka Chopra, who is reportedly close friends with bride Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. While many of her fans loved her lilac skirt suit, others have slammed it. Here’s a look at why Chopra’s dress has received so much shade, and what her fan base says in return. (Plus, check out page 7 to see why her outfit probably got the royal stamp of approval.)

Chopra dawned a Vivienne Westwood ensemble for her friend’s big day. The outfit consisted of a slim-fitting knee-length lilac dress with a matching fitted blazer complete with diagonal buttons and an asymmetrical neckline. The look was completed with a lilac Philip Treacy fascinator and matching clear-toed shoes — which, surprisingly, fell in line with the royal wedding’s dress code. (More on that on page 7!)

Some really liked it

Like with many things the Quantico actress wears, her royal wedding get-up garnered some rave reviews. It made the “Best Dressed” list for Town & Country as well as Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. wrote after the event that Chopra looked ” incredibly lady-like and polished” in her monochromatic garb.

Other outlets were more critical

Like with most things in life, the whole world didn’t agree that Priyanka Chopra’s royal wedding outfit was a slam dunk. One writer for Daily O wrote the outfit made Chopra look “more stern, stiff, and schoolmarmish.” The writer goes on to quote comments from Facebook, alleging many agree Chopra looked “awkward” in the ensemble as if she was “trying to fit in.”

The harshest critic?

Perhaps the biggest critique of Priyanka Chopra’s choice of clothing for the royal wedding was that she didn’t choose to wear something representing Indian designers or fashion. Her harshest critic was quite possibly Jaya Jaitly. The former Samata Party president tweeted: “How sad an Indian actor attending the royal wedding in UK should dress like a British aristocrat at Ascot rather than represent a free and independent India in a beautiful sari.”

This reaction isn’t that surprising

This isn’t the first time Jaitly has taken aim at western fashion. She notably criticised Bollywood stars wearing western gowns and suits at red carpet events. “It’s like Indian fashion designers trying to do western dresses,” Jaitly reportedly said in an interview with IANS. “Why don’t they wear most beautiful gorgeous sari, and everyone will go ‘wow’.”

The fan rebuttal

Not surprisingly, Priyanka Chopra’s fans came to her rescue when Jaitly’s tweet went viral. Many comments — which the Hindustan Times posted — defend Chopra’s choice to wear whatever she wants to. Comments also mentioned that Chopra was attending her friend’s wedding and not functioning as a representative for India at that time.

The royal wedding dress code

As several of Chopra’s supporters pointed out, the Vivienne Westwood skirt suit worked because it was in compliance with the royal wedding’s dress code. (Something that other guests at the wedding did not follow.) Jaitly reportedly scoffed at the idea of having a dress code in general, but fans stood by Chopra’s choice to wear the lilac get-up.
