The Real Reason Why Powerful Men Cheat

Donald Trump, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tiger Woods, and Brad Pitt: What makes powerful men who seem to have it all, cheat on their spouse?

Some couples experience cheating once one partner attains a position of power. In other cases, the individual who cheats may have impulsivity issues in addition to a relationship strain. Whatever the specific reason, there are patterns powerful men exhibit that lead to infidelity. Ultimately, researchers found it boils down to one thing (hint, page 6).

1. They truly believe they’ll get away with it

Power breeds groupies so powerful men have access to a number of beautiful individuals whenever they desire, according to The Huffington Post. Men who frequently travel may also have easy opportunities away from home.

For the rest of us mere mortals, we have people around us who are happy to tell us no. But powerful men tend to surround themselves with “yes” people. Never living in reality can spurn all sorts of bad behavior beyond cheating. Remember when Justin Bieber went off the rails? Being surrounded by people who don’t intervene with bad behavior only allows it to continue.

Power and the addiction to adrenaline go hand-in-hand, The Huffington Post reports. Whether a job or personal life fuels the addiction, men in power need that energy surge to keep their lives interesting. Unfortunately, cheating on their partner or spouse sometimes meets that desire.

Powerful men may experience boredom in their relationship if it doesn’t provide him with that adrenaline rush, according to Psych Central. “Something in the man’s life or his relationship isn’t OK, and the affair creates the trigger for change. That something might be boredom after many years together,” Terri Orbuch, author of Finding Love Again: 6 Simple Steps to a New and Happy Relationship told Psych Central.

Confidence may be the biggest factor that determines whether a powerful person will cheat, Daily Mail reports. Gender plays no part in the urge to cheat, but rather the amount of confidence the powerful person possesses. The more confidence he or she has, the more likely for infidelity.

Cheating may be more power than man-centered, according to science, Daily Mail reports. Researchers found cheating occurs with both powerful men and women. Because more men hold powerful roles, society hears about powerful men who cheat more often than women.
