The Shocking Statement Donald Trump Made When Melania Finally Made Her First Public Appearance
However, much to everyone’s relief Melania finally resurfaced at a recent event honoring 40 Gold Star families, CNN reports. And while the gathering was rather somber, the president found a way to make it super awkward (page 5) with his comments about his wife and more (page 6).
1. Where was Melania during her absence?
Despite the conspiracy theories and speculation, Melania was probably recovering from kidney surgery, which was announced on May 14, Vox reports. Her hospital stay was longer than what is typically required and she remained out of the public eye ever since.
During her absence, Melania was actively posting on social media, thanking people for wishing her a speedy recovery, but also poking fun at the media on Twitter. “I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!”

2. Melania’s statement was appropriate for the somber event
The first lady released a statement about the event that honored Gold Star families who lost loved ones. “To all those who have lost loved ones in service to our country, our nation grieves with you,” CNN reports. “It is a solemn reminder that we, the American people, are able to live as freely as we do because of the selfless sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. We remain indebted to each of them and we honor them today, together, with their families.”
Next: Everyone was watching to see if FLOTUS was well.
3. This was Melania’s first appearance after kidney surgery
Guests wondered if Melania was feeling well considering she had an extended hospital stay. However, Melania didn’t disappoint. She showed up wearing a stunning black dress with heels to match, MarketWatch reports. Melania also appeared to be the picture of health as she sat next to the president while speakers addressed the room.
Next: While Melania brought elegance to the room, the president was filled with bluster.
4. Donald couldn’t resist making this comment
Although the event was closed to the public and media, one person managed to ask the question that was on everyone’s mind, “Where’s Melania?” CNN reports. Clearly, the president took this opportunity to take a playful jab at the conspiracy theories. Donald especially wanted to address the speculation that the first couple would ultimately divorce. So, he responded, “Did she leave him?” And pointed at Melania sitting in the front row.
Next: This is why the comment went over like a lead balloon.
5. It wasn’t the comment, but the atmosphere that made it so uncomfortable
Although the president didn’t take it upon himself to start the dialog about his “missing wife,” his response didn’t make the question any less awkward. The Gold Star ceremony is a somber event, created to honor the families who lost loved ones in combat. Making a crack in the midst of a serious event was likely seen as crass considering the families were grieving. The media and social media users couldn’t resist calling him out for how he handled the question.
Next: But he didn’t stop there.
6. The event was to honor grieving families, but Donald decided it was also about this too
Using any opportunity to boost his ratings, Donald likely went off script. In front of families in mourning, CNN reports POTUS talked about the economy. One insider said he boasted about the “strong economy” during his remarks. This assertion was not only inappropriate but also inconsequential during such a grim event.
Next: America can expect to see FLOTUS again soon.
7. Melania will continue to make public appearances
Perhaps to keep speculation at bay, Melania will continue to make public appearances. A meeting with Federal Emergency Management Agency Headquarters is next on her agenda, according to CNN. This will also mark her first appearance in front of the press. Both the president and first lady will attend a briefing to address hurricane preparedness.
