Photo Reveals the Tattoo Catelynn Lowell From ‘Teen Mom’ Got While Seeking Treatment for Her Mental Health
Since the days of 16 and Pregnant, MTV fans adored Catelynn Lowell and her boyfriend, Tyler Baltierra. The couple is most known for respectably giving their first child up for adoption — but it wasn’t too far down the road when they decided to have another child to raise together. Now, Catelynn and Tyler are married. And though on Teen Mom we see the couple making it work, Catelynn’s mental health struggles continue when the cameras are off.
Recently, Catelynn sought treatment for suicidal thoughts — and she also revealed a new tattoo to help her through the tough times.
Catelynn’s struggles with anxiety were a huge focus on Teen Mom
Anxiety and depression aren’t new for Catelynn. She told In Touch Weekly that there were points on the show when her anxiety and depression became so severe that the thought of living another day seemed nearly impossible.
“I started having anxiety and panic attacks in the middle of the night, which led me into a deep depression,” she told the publication. She was also six months pregnant with her second child at the time, making matters more difficult. Tyler also battled depression as a teen, so he knew the signs and made Catelynn an appointment with a counselor. That’s when she was formally diagnosed and prescribed antidepressants.
In 2016, she checked herself into rehab
Teen Mom OG fans may remember when Catelynn bought a $3,000 mini-pig when she was at her breaking point. Tyler wasn’t pleased with the purchase — and Catelynn later admitted that extra stress of taking care of an animal put her over the edge.
After realizing that she needed something “more intense” for her mental health and recovery, Catelynn decided to check herself into rehab. Us Weekly explains she entered an Arizona-based treatment program for a month. Following the program, she returned in high spirits, saying it was the best decision she could have made for her mental health in this tweet.
And postpartum depression has been a huge struggle for the mom
Following the birth of her second daughter, Novalee, Catelynn experienced serious postpartum depression. As Daily Mail Online reports, she says, “I don’t think people understood the fact that my panic attacks are paralytic panic attacks, which is where I can not think, I can not function or move or hear any noises. I just sit in a ball and cry.”
Catelynn and Tyler hope to expand their family in the future — but the baby blues make it difficult. “I want to have a big family and have lots of kids, but it’s scary,” she says. The next time she’s pregnant, she plans on asking her mother for more help to alleviate some stress.
She most recently entered rehab for suicidal thoughts
The Huffington Post reports in November 2017, Catelynn tweeted, “Well today I thought of every way to kill myself … so I’m going to treatment.” Though she did quit briefly in mid-December because she missed her daughter, she returned. And after missing both Thanksgiving and Christmas, she finally announced at the end of December that she was going home.
Catelynn seemed in high spirits after treatment judging from this tweet. And Tyler also expressed his gratitude, saying that “her resilience continues to triumph over what life has thrown her way.”
And her tattoo is a reminder to keep going through the hardest times
In mid-November, Catelynn posted a photo of her new tattoo on Twitter. It says “My story isn’t over yet” — a true testament to her battle with mental illness. And it seems her photo inspired others who struggle with their mental health to post photos of their inspirational words and tattoos as well. Many of her fans commented, showing off their own personal mantras they turned into tattoos. And many others had semicolon tattoos, which are related to mental health thanks to this movement.
Being out of Carly’s life takes a toll on Catelynn and Tyler
While postpartum depression with Nova was tough for Catelynn, there continues to be something else that weighs heavy on her mind: her first daughter. Catelynn had Carly at just 16 years old, and thus gave her up for adoption to Brandon and Theresa. They chose an open adoption so they can see Carly from time to time, but it’s still not easy.
People reports Catelynn and Tyler brought Nova to visit Carly in January 2018. After the visit, Catelynn was “bawling her eyes out,” as it was hard for her to leave Carly behind. “I could tell Carly misses us,” Catelynn says.
Is the couple headed for a breakup?
We can’t imagine this power couple ever heading for a breakup, but the rumors circulated nonetheless. Thankfully, In Touch Weekly says Catelynn and Tyler are as strong as ever. Apparently, fans on Reddit noticed Tyler removed Catelynn from his Instagram bio, and the rumors ensued. But now the info is back, so fans can stop speculating on any bad news to come.
Also, we can’t forget Tyler’s heartwarming shoutout to his wife when she was in treatment. “Cate comes home today and I can’t wait to just hug her for as long as I want,” he said.
