Trump has been married twice before. His was married to his first wife, Ivana, from 1977 to 1992. The ending of that union resulted in Donald paying one of the most expensive divorce settlements, at $25 million. In addition to $14 million in cash, $350,000 in annual alimony, and child support payments of $300,000 each year, Ivana was granted a Connecticut mansion and a Trump Plaza apartment. His second marriage was to Marla Maples from 1993 to 1999.

Donald Trump reportedly met his future wife in 1998 while he was on a date with cosmetics heiress Celina Midelfart. However, Melania said she wasn’t all that impressed when she met The Donald. In fact, she told People she heard he was a ladies’ man. When she was introduced to him, she told him she wasn’t who he was looking for. “I had heard he was a ladies’ man, and so I said, ‘I’m not one of the ladies,’” Melania told People. Despite her initial resistance, the two hit it off and married seven years later in 2005.

Melania and Donald have been married for 12 years. Perhaps the secret to their longevity is the fact that they don’t share a bathroom. That works out really well for Donald, because it seems like he’s not a fan of witnessing his partner passing gas or going to the bathroom. In an interview with Howard Stern he was quite happy about the fact that he’s never heard or witnessed Melania do either of those things.

Keeping things separate appears to be a running theme in this relationship. A good night’s sleep is very important, and it seems like this couple takes their sleep hygiene very seriously. The First Couple is rumored to not share a bed, either. US Weekly reported Melania and Donald share a bedroom, but not a bed. Perhaps getting enough sleep is what helps keep arguments at a minimum.

Each partnership is different, and some partners have a varying tolerance for what some might refer to as nagging. Some husbands complain about their wives being a nag, but that’s unlikely to be something you’ll hear from Donald Trump. Melania is quoted as saying she is very careful about not upsetting Donald or being too much of a burden. Melania told GQ she doesn’t nag her husband and she isn’t needy.

Donald relies on Melania to help boost his image and broadcast some of his accomplishments. Mother Jones reported an instance during an interview with Howard Stern where Melania joined in via phone so she could verify Donald’s prowess in bed. In another interview, Vanity Fair reported Donald asked Melania to tell an interviewer that he’s a good husband.

The First Lady takes her role as a mother to 11-year-old Barron seriously. She told People she has taken over most of the parenting duties since her husband travels often. She also told the magazine since Barron is at an age where he is still discovering life, she wants to be active in guiding him through the journey. “He wants to be a golfer, a businessman, a pilot. It’s that age when you introduce him to stuff, and I like to be very hands-on,” she said. Melania is also stepmother to Ivanka, Donald Trump Jr., Tiffany, and Eric Trump.

Melania prefers not to be in the spotlight, instead allowing Donald to have the attention. This is why some of their friends say they’re perfect for each other. One of the couple’s friends, William Eubanks, is reported in Vanity Fair as saying Melania has no problem letting her husband take the lead. “She enjoys her role of stepping back and letting him take center stage,” said Eubanks.
