Fall is well on its way, meaning that it’s about that time of year for pumpkin-flavored everything. This season, you’ll be able to find everything from cereal to coffee creamer with the the fall flavor. Unfortunately, as satisfying as they may be for your tastevbuds, most of them lack natural pumpkin flavors and are made out of tons of sugar. As you welcome the familiar taste back into your diet, make sure to avoid these seven unhealthy pumpkin-flavored snacks.
1. Entenmann’s Pumpkin Pop’ems
If you’re a fan of doughnuts, it’s hard not to get excited about the fall flavors that come around during this time of year. But if you’re craving one of these treats, skip the Entenmann’s Pumpkin Pop’ems. Sugar is the main ingredient, not to mention the corn syrup solids and high-fructose corn syrup within. The label mentions tons of other ingredients you’ve probably never heard of, which is a clear sign this isn’t the smartest snack. One serving contains 13 grams of fat, 6 of which are saturated, and 17 grams of sugar. That totals 240 calories, which is just too much for something that doesn’t offer any redeeming nutritional value.
2. Entenmann’s Little Bites Pumpkin Muffins
Think twice about grabbing a package of these pumpkin muffins for breakfast or for a quick snack, unless you don’t mind fueling yourself with mostly sugar. Similar to the brand’s doughnut holes, sugar is the main ingredient. They’re also made with strange additives and artificial flavors. One serving has 180 calories, 8 grams of fat, 25 grams of carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, and only 2 grams of protein. Oh yeah, and a package also contains 15 grams of sugar.
3. Nabisco Oreo Pumpkin Spice Cookies
The world’s most popular cookie is back with its pumpkin spice rendition for the fall season. But if you’re going to be eating them, keep in mind that they’re also mostly made with sugar and refined flour. High-fructose corn syrup is also on the ingredient list along with artificial colors and flavors. Pumpkin, on the other hand, is curiously absent. One serving of two cookies is 150 calories and has 7 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar.
4. Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies
Pumpkin and cheesecake may sound like an appetizing combination, but if you’re conscious of the food you eat, you’ll definitely want to pass on these cookies. A serving of one cookie has 130 calories and 4.5 grams of fat, 2.5 of which are saturated. The ingredient list includes unbleached enriched wheat flour, hydrogenated oils, chemical additives, and multiple sources of sugar. This leaves you with 12 grams of sugar for every cookie you eat.
5. Kellogg’s Frosted Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts
This pastry may make for an easy and convenient breakfast, but there are definitely better options out there for on-the-go food than this Pop-Tart. One Frosted Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tart has 200 calories, 5 grams of fat, 36 grams of carbohydrates, 14 grams of sugar, and 170 milligrams of sodium. You’ll get all of this for less than 1 gram of fiber and only 2 grams of protein. And that’s just one pastry in the two-pack. Eat the whole thing and you’ll fill yourself up with double those amounts.
6. Hershey’s Fall Harvest Kisses Pumpkin Spice
This chocolate candy brand is taking their most well-known classic to another level by adding the fall flavor we’ve all come to love. But its main ingredient is sugar, followed by vegetable oil. One serving of nine Hershey Kisses offers 210 calories, more than half of which come from the 12 grams of fat. You’ll also be consuming 24 grams of carbohydrates and, not surprisingly, 22 grams of sugar.
7. Keebler Fudge Stripes Pumpkin Spice
These thin cookies may seem like a light option, but according to the packaging, this isn’t the case. Like many other processed snacks, this Keebler cookie is made out of enriched flour, sugar, high-fructose syrup, and artificial flavors. Two cookies have 130 calories, 4 grams of saturated fat, and no fiber. There’s also 10 grams of sugar per serving and less than 1 gram of protein. It might be time to try something containing actual pumpkin.
