The 1 Thing Very Few People Know About Melania Trump

Melania Trump isn’t what we’d call an open book — in fact, she is one of the most private first ladies to occupy the White House in decades. While she has stated that she’s very political in her private life, she is quoted saying, “I’m choosing not to go political in public because that is my husband’s job.”

The woman CNN dubbed the “most mysterious woman in Washington,” has remained quiet alongside her extremely extroverted and vocal husband. These are a few of the little-known facts about Melania Trump, as well as one that very few people know (page 5).

She was a child model

Melania Trump was born as Melanija Knavs in a part of former Yugoslavia that later became Slovenia. Her mother, a clothing designer, encouraged her to walk her first catwalk at age five. She got her big break as a model when photographer Stane Jerko spotted her on the sidelines of a show at age 17.

She signed with a modeling agency in Milan and began traveling to Paris for photo shoots. She changed her name to Melania Knauss and eventually moved to New York in 1996.

She won’t use a nanny

The FLOTUS has a glamorous, fast-paced lifestyle, so it comes as a surprise that she refuses to hire a nanny to help watch her 11-year-old son, Barron. Instead, Melania chooses to hire people to assist in other parts of her busy life so she can spend one-on-one time with him.

“I don’t have a nanny,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2016. “I have a chef, and I have my assistant, and that’s it. I do it myself. You know, those hours with your child are really important ones.”

She knows multiple languages

Anyone who has heard the first lady speak can detect her fairly heavy accent. This is likely because English isn’t Melania’s second language (after her native Slovene) but her sixth.

Melania speaks French, Italian, and English fluently, however, according to Vox, she also knows some Serbo-Croatian and German. She learned Italian, French, and German all over the course of her international modeling career.

She’s the second foreign-born first lady

While Louisa Adams, the sixth first lady, and wife of President John Quincy Adams, was arguably the first foreign-born first lady in American history. However, her father was an American merchant living in London when Louisa was born, making her “something of a liminal case,” sources say.

Regardless, Melania moved to the United States to pursue her modeling career in 1996. She became a permanent U.S. resident in 2001 and a citizen in 2006.

She’s the second Catholic first lady

A White House spokesperson confirmed that the First Lady practices Catholicism. This makes her the second Catholic first lady, as Jacqueline Kennedy was the first. She was reportedly secretly baptized as a child since the League of Communists of Slovenia controlled the country at the time.

She has met the pope

Melania was able to visit the Vatican and meet the pope last March. She handed him a set of rosaries to bless her with after joking with him about her husband’s diet.

Her Catholic background explains why she opened one of her husband’s presidential rallies with “The Lord’s Prayer” and laid flowers at the feet of a statue of Mary while on a visit to a Vatican-affiliated hospital.

Donald is Presbyterian

One factor that the public took notice of during the 2016 presidential election was how the two major party nominees rarely talked about their religious beliefs. “Donald has never been public about his faith, and when he hast tried, it has been futile. It’s not his language, but that doesn’t mean it’s not his heart,” said Paula White, a Florida pastor who has known the president for over a decade.

However, it’s confirmed that Donald is a professed Presbyterian, while his wife remains a Catholic.
