Besides craving shut eye for obvious reasons, an unhealthy weight can also be attributed to a lack of quality sleep. According to Dr. Robert S Rosenberg, Board Certified Sleep Medicine Physician, and author of Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day, many experts in the medical community think that a lack of sleep is in part responsible for the epidemic of obesity. “The National Sleep Foundation reports that over 30% of Americans are sleeping less than six hours a night,” Rosenberg said. While we might think that getting any amount of quality sleep is sometimes a luxury — whether that means sleeping on a natural, memory foam mattress like Essentia, or simply passing out on the couch in your office for a quick 30 minute lunchtime nap — it’s time you start taking advantage of these 4 ways to actually lose weight while you sleep.
1. Drink a protein shake
Our metabolism plays an important role in weight loss, and is a process that is seen during our sleep cycle, as well. According to Isadora Baum, Certified Health Coach and Founder of Live for You Now Coaching, “Researchers at Florida State University found that drinking a protein-rich shake that was roughly 150 calories before bed sped up the metabolism and muscle repair while sleeping.”
2. Keep the room chilled
Ever hear that sleeping in a cold room can be beneficial? Aside from the fact that it’s probably more comfortable, keeping your room at a cool temperature setting can also aid in weight loss. “Setting the thermostat to between 65 and 72 degrees F, with the ideal temperature being 68 degrees F, will keep the body at its optimal temperature for weight loss and a sound sleep,” Baum said. 3. Drink alkaline water

We are also sweating while we sleep, as the body’s assimilation cycle is generally 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., and the cleansing cycle is 4 a.m. to noon. If we are already dehydrated, the body doesn’t have enough water to sweat out and holds onto the water weight and fat.” So, while staying hydrated throughout the day is always important, the benefits of drinking water before bed can also include helping you to lose weight while sleeping.
4. Sniff peppermint
Peppermint has been considered to be pretty beneficial when it comes to weight loss, acting as a suppressant with hunger-curbing abilities. “Peppermint might help us shed pounds and control our appetites,” Baum said. “Try lighting a mint candle or smelling an essential oil prior to bed, and your metabolism might change while you sleep.”
