After Joining Weight Watchers at Age 11, Chrissy Metz Reveals Her Insane Weight Loss Journey (Plus, How She Lost 100 Pounds in 5 Months)
Long before Chrissy Metz won our hearts through her role as Kate Pearson on This Is Us, she was a struggling actress and singer who was also struggling with her weight. Hollywood isn’t always kind to those who don’t fit a certain mold (or a certain pants size), and Metz dealt with a lot of rejection in her life.
But her story took a happy turn when she won the role of Kate, beating out a much thinner actress in the process. Her authenticity may have something to do with that — Metz is definitely no stranger to the long journey of weight loss, and her story is both insane and inspiring.
Like Kate, Metz has always struggled
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Metz said she was “born chubby” and, despite being a fairly active child, always had to watch what she ate. She learned early on that she’d gain weight if she ate certain things. This is similar to Kate Pearson’s upbringing in This Is Us, who watches her weight fluctuate under the watchful eye of her concerned mother.
Next: Metz joined Weight Watchers at a very young age.
Weight Watchers at age 11
Another way Metz relates to her character, Kate, is that they both have parents who didn’t really know how to cope. On This Is Us, we see Kate’s mother’s concern and her struggle with wanting her daughter to be healthy without wanting her to feel poorly about herself.
Metz’s mother sent her to Weight Watchers at the tender age of 11, a time when weight is typically not at the forefront of a kid’s mind. Metz admitted she was “the youngest person in the damned room, and it was awkward.”
“My mom was trying to figure it out, but it’s a process,” Metz added.
Next: The yo-yo dieting
Just like Kate, Metz yo-yo dieted …
When Metz decided to pursue acting, she was a size 12, but dropped 50 pounds before moving to LA at the recommendation of her then-manager. With work slow, she took a job as a junior casting agent, but that was like “watching your boyfriend take another woman out every day,” she told People in 2017. She soon began a cycle of yo-yo dieting and eating her feelings, gaining 100 pounds in the process.
Next: Metz eventually reached her breaking point.
… but this is what got her to drop 100 pounds in just 5 months
Unfortunately, Metz had a panic attack on her 30th birthday that sent her to the hospital and snapped her back to reality, she told People. She decided to give herself a physical and emotional overhaul.
“I was gung ho,” Metz said. “I lost 100 pounds in less than five months. All I did was eat a 2,000 calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day.”
Next: Her persistence paid off.
Her confidence earned her a part
Although the numbers on the scale were dropping, when Metz landed a recurring role on American Horror Story, she learned she’d have to wear a fat suit.
While Metz was thrilled to learn she wasn’t big enough, wearing the suit, she said, was sobering. “I thought, ‘What if I become that heavy and can’t walk around or get stuck in the doorframe?’ I was like, ‘I don’t want this for me,’ ” she admitted.
Next: Here’s the truth about the weight loss contract.
Did she really sign a weight loss contract?
In the very first episode of This Is Us, a weight loss contract we see Kate Pearson vow to take control of her weight and lose it slowly and steadily. And while it’s true that Metz did sign when she accepted the role, it’s not as restrictive as it sounds. There’s no specific number in mind, and Metz can take her time and lose it slowly, just as Kate is doing. Better yet, there’s no “end result” in mind, so Metz doesn’t have to have a specific goal.
Next: This role has been life-changing for Metz in more ways than one.
Happier, healthier, and richer
Metz says she’s happy with herself and confident now, which must feel amazing after a lifetime of struggle and self-doubt. Being allowed to lose weight slowly and in a healthy way while playing her dream role is clearly an amazing experience for her. And since Metz has previously talked about how she only had 81 cents in her bank account (and was collecting unemployment) when she earned her role on This Is Us, it’s safe to say this feels like a happy ending.
