Everyone has a different workout style, and just like with anything you do, your workout is a reflection of what it takes for you to get the job done. Every person’s different, and what works for one individual and what works for you might be night and day. In order to help define your workout personality, we spoke with certified personal trainer, bestselling author, and ISSA director of wellness John Rowley for tips on how to determine a workout that’s right for you.
Consistency is key
According to Rowley, the key to finding a workout program that meshes well with your personality is to find exercises that you’ll do consistently. This advice makes sense: If you find something you actually like and are willing to do, you’re more likely to do it. If you prefer being outdoors to being stuck inside a gym, pick activities you like, or at least don’t mind doing, and incorporate them into your routine so you’ll stick to it.
Turn your workout into a daily habit
It might seem tough to stay committed to your workout routine. Is “mind over matter” really a thing, or just a saying people who actually love working out tell us? Rowley says, “Daily habits are the most important thing with success in any area of your life including your workouts. Make it the most important appointment in the day and you will soon find that you will be sticking to the program you are committed to.” If you make time for your fitness goals and prioritize those healthy habits, your body and mind will thank you.
If you don’t like cardio…
For anyone who prefers the couch to a treadmill, cardio probably doesn’t top the charts of the “to do at gym” list. But don’t let that discourage you from staying active. You don’t have to run 5 miles a day in order to stay in shape. Rowley told us, “Just walk. Schedule a time to walk and then go out and do it. Consistency is the most important ingredient to success.”
If you get bored easily…
If you’re looking to build muscle mass but hate the monotonous routine of the gym, it’s important to know what can be done to ensure you’ll meet your fitness goals. “Resistance training is key when building muscle and burning fat,” Rowley said. “The key is constantly changing what you are doing so you don’t get bored.”
Build your workout goals into your schedule
There are a few things that will help you achieve success when it comes to your fitness goals. “Consistency, resistance training, cardio and nutrition are necessary to get into shape. The key is designing your schedule so you can do them in a very time efficient way. Most people can get into great shape in as little as 90 minutes a week.”
