Many people consider breakfast the most important meal of the day, but even if you’re eating right, you could be sabotaging the rest of your day based on your choice of drink. While some people may bask in the glory of taking a few extra minutes to brew a warm pot of coffee at home before racing out the door, others resort to grabbing a cup of joe along the way. Convenient? Yes. Healthy? Not always.
Here are 10 of the worst breakfast beverages you can drink.
1. Java Chip Frappuccino Blended Coffee, Starbucks
As the McDonald’s of coffee shops, Starbucks has an overwhelming list of high-calorie menu items. Having mastered a wide array of beverages sure to leave customers with a healthy dose of sugar shock, Starbucks continues to reign supreme. At 470 calories for a 16-ounce cup, the Java Chip Frappuccino Blended Coffee is much more than just a shot of caffeine — it’s an entire meal — without the nutritional value.
2. Frozen Coffee Coolatta, Dunkin’ Donuts
Dunkin’ Donuts has long been one of the nation’s most beloved breakfast spots, there’s no doubt about that. Thanks to widespread accessibility and effortless convenience, the franchise successfully delivers more than just doughnuts to anyone with a sweet tooth. And choosing a tempting treat is just as easy as swinging through the drive-through on your morning commute. Beware the Frozen Coffee Coolatta, though. Despite bearing a name that seems pretty straightforward in the world of souped-up coffees, this drink packs 420 calories and a whopping 61 grams of sugar into every 16-ounce cup.
3. Caramel Cooler, Caribou Coffee
A whopping 690 calories for a medium drink — yikes! Boasting hardly any nutritional value, the Caramel Cooler just isn’t a good choice. This iced coffee is blended with caramel, then topped with whipped cream and more caramel. Chances are, you probably won’t be feeling so great if you start your day off with this decadent drink. Did we mention it has 91 grams of sugar? Just say no.
4. Chocolate & Caramel Swirl Javiva, Peet’s Coffee & Tea
The name says it all here, so there’s not much explaining to do with this one. At 400 calories for a 16-ounce drink, the Chocolate & Caramel Swirl Javiva is pure decadence. Creamy caramel meets rich chocolate meets fresh brewed coffee, all topped off with whipped cream. Pair this beverage with a heaping pile of syrup-covered pancakes, and you’ll satisfy your sweet tooth for the entire week.
5. Iced Caramel Latte, Panera Bread
Who doesn’t love a latte in the morning? Chances are, though, that you’re better off ordering an unsweetened version. This no different when you find yourself ordering off the coffee menu at Panera. The Iced Caramel Latte adds sweet caramel to the creamy blend, which comes to 430 calories and 16 grams of fat for every 20-ounce serving.
5. McCafé Frappé Chocolate Chip, McDonald’s
Sweet caramel, chocolate chips, and a hint of coffee — yum. The McCafé Frappe Chocolate Chip makes our list as one of the most decadent drinks, especially when you consider the 500 calories and 21 grams of fat packed in. Like most other high-cal foods at McDonald’s, it’s fair game all day long. Add even more chocolate and caramel on top of a pile of whipped cream, and you have yourself one monster of a treat.
6. Frozen Vanilla Latte, Krispy Kreme
The Krispy Kreme brand hardly evokes images of a healthy lifestyle. And why should it? The company has, after all, made its fortune slinging calorie-ridden donuts to sugar-crazed folks since 1937. So, why not take it one step further? Doughnuts aside, the rest of the menu isn’t exactly low-cal (shocking, we know). In particular, a 12-ounce Frozen Vanilla Latte comes in at 330 calories and 49 grams of sugar, making a doughnut-latte combo just about the worst thing you could order from this sugar factory.
7. Peanut Butter Moo’d Smoothie, Jamba Juice
Most people consider a smoothie more of a meal, but consider something other than Jamba Juice’s Peanut Butter Moo’d when you’re starting your day off with one. Peanut butter, frozen yogurt, and milk chocolate come together to make up a whopping 770 calories for a medium serving of this over-the-top treat. You’re much better off sticking to the super green options.
8. Frozen Caramel Latte, Au Bon Pain
With 590 calories and 90 grams of sugar, Au Bon Pain’s Frozen Caramel Latte is certainly more dessert than breakfast drink. Add in all the unnatural, syrupy ingredients, and this drink will do nothing but derail you from your diet.
9. Iced Green Mountain Coffee With Chocolate, Sonic
Sonic isn’t exactly a coffee-lover’s go-to spot, but if you happen to be there grabbing some breakfast for your brood, you’ll definitely need some coffee of your own. The good news is Sonic serves Green Mountain Coffee. The bad news is they’ve managed to doctor it up just enough to fit in with the rest of the menu. This means they add chocolate to a regular old cup of joe. At 410 calories for a large, the Iced Green Mountain Coffee with Chocolate isn’t the absolute worst on our list, but it’s not that good, either.
10. Mocha, Cosi
Cosi is a tasty option for a healthier bite to eat for people living in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest, unless you’re browsing breakfast drink options. Some menu items do skirt the line of healthier grab-and-go options, but one breakfast beverage does not. The medium Mocha packs 463 calories, giving you more than enough reason to get your coffee fix someplace else.
