5 Detox Diets Celebrities Use to Lose Weight

Detox diets rid your body of toxins and pollutants by having you consume fewer unhealthy substances, such as alcohol, caffeine, artificial preservatives, and pesticides, and replace them with liquids and foods that help your body cleanse, Fitness explains. Many celebrities partake in detox diets, using them as a way to shed pounds after the holidays, before an upcoming role, or prior to walking the red carpet. From a raw food-only diet to a short-and-sweet 48-hour cleanse, here are five diets that celebrities use to detoxify and cleanse.

1. Raw Food Detox Diet

Backed by Demi Moore and Beyonce, the Raw Food Detox Diet is a program that eliminates cooked food from your diet. According to Mother Nature Network, the detox plan believes the cooking process removes essential enzymes from food that your body needs to cleanse itself. A-listers Amanda Seyfried and Uma Thurman are also fans of this detox diet, which encourages you to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and seeds in their raw state, Eating Well explains.

Mother Nature Network notes that this diet has five different levels; level five is the most lenient and includes 75% raw foods with at least one cooked meal a day. Level one is the strictest, only allowing dieters to consume raw fruits, vegetables, and juices. Body + Soul notes that your food can’t be cooked above 118 degrees Fahrenheit, and dairy, processed meat alternatives, and artificial sweeteners are strictly forbidden. You may want to take a supplement while following this diet. If you aren’t eating animal-based products, there’s a good chance you aren’t getting enough vitamin B12 and D, states Eating Well.

2. The Kind Diet

Alicia Silverstone is the founder of The Kind Diet, a vegan detox diet plan that promises to help you shed pounds, improve your skin, and reduce your impact on the planet. Shape explains that Silverstone’s diet isn’t a quick fix, but rather, a long-term plan that encourages you to choose nutrient-rich foods over animal products and other processed foods. Web MD notes that this diet focuses on eating whole grains, beans, and vegetables. You can also eat fruit, in moderation, and can occasionally enjoy dessert.

By cutting processed and unhealthy foods from your diet, you’ll eliminate toxins from your body, consume more nutrients and fewer contaminants, and lose weight. “I stopped the dieting thing 11 years ago when I went vegan — which I did for the animals. But magically, all this weight came off. Imagine that freedom! This diet is not about what you can’t eat but finding food that’s yummy and uplifts you. I never count calories, but I eat so well,” Silverstone told Women’s Health.

3. 7-day Goop Detox Diet

Gwyneth Paltrow created a 7-day Detox Diet, which includes a mix of smoothies, salads, soups, fruits, seeds and nuts, fish, chicken, and whole grains. By cutting out unhealthy foods, your body is able to detox easily and effectively, Paltrow writes on her blog, Goop. “Drink A LOT of water. I created this menu plan for a seven-day elimination diet. The shakes and juices are meant to be liquid meals that help decrease the amount of work your digestive system has to do,” she advises.

The strict version of this cleanse requires you to use alkaline water, pHour salts, chlorophyll, and aloe vera, but you can swap hard-to-find items with more common ingredients. For example, Good Housekeeping suggests purchasing plain coconut milk instead of young Thai coconut oil. Not only will you shed a few pesky pounds, but Good Housekeeping adds that you’ll also experience an increase in energy and have glowing, supermodel-like skin.

4. Master Cleanse

In order to drop 20 pounds for her role in Dreamgirls, Beyonce followed the Master Cleanse, People reports. This detox, which is also referred to as the lemonade diet, claims you can cleanse your body of toxins and lose 20 pounds in 10 days by giving up solid foods and only consuming a lemonade-like drink. U.S. News & World Report explains that the drink is made using fresh lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water.

Beyonce warns that following this diet is no easy feat. “I was very hungry, therefore I was evil. When we wrapped the movie I was so excited….I ate a whole dozen Krispy Kreme donuts,” she said in the People article. The pop diva isn’t the only star who’s attempted this intense detox plan; The Gloss notes that Pink, Demi Moore, Ashanti, and Michelle Rodriguez have all tried it.

5. David Kirsch’s 48-Hour Detox Diet

Fitness expert David Kirsch’s detox plan requires you to drink a lemonade formula called LemonAid, created by Kirsch, four times a day for two days, Woman’s Day explains. This detox was made famous by actress Anne Hathaway, who sometimes participates in this cleanse before red-carpet events, People reports.

Because the lemonade drink only consists of lemon, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper (much like the Master Cleanse), Fitbie warns that you’ll only be consuming about 80 calories per day. Most health experts agree that a short-term detox plan is healthier for you than a long-term cleansing program, explains Woman’s Day. “In general, a few days of malnutrition (i.e., fasting) won’t induce severe harm,” Gloria Tsang, RD, founder of HealthCastle.com, told Woman’s Day.
