McDonald’s recently launched a marketing campaign that explains exactly what is in its french fries. While the first ingredient — potatoes — is reassuring, the other 18 aren’t quite as comforting. According to IJReview, the fast food chain’s fries also include several oils and many artificial ingredients, including sodium acid pyrophosphate, dimethylpolysiloxane, and tertiary-butylhydroquinone.
An easy way to bypass eating all of those unhealthy and unnatural ingredients is by preparing your own french fries, which is why we’ve compiled 7 fry recipes that require 7 ingredients or fewer. McDonald’s might not be able to make its fries with fewer than 19 ingredients, but you certainly can!
1. Perfect French Fries
There are no mysterious ingredients in Food Network’s Perfect French Fries. It only calls for three items: potatoes, vegetable or peanut oil, and sea salt. You’ll find tjat the directions are also straightforward: soak and dry the potatoes, fry them, drain, refry, and enjoy! The recipe yields 8 servings.
- 5 pounds russet potatoes
- Vegetable or peanut oil, for frying
- Sea salt
Directions: Peel and rinse the potatoes. Cut them into sticks by cutting the potato in 4 or 5 vertical pieces and then cutting each piece into sticks. Place them in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Allow them to soak for 2 to 3 hours. When you’re ready to make the fries, drain off the water and lay the potatoes on 2 baking sheets lined with paper towels. Blot with paper towels to dry them. Heat a few inches of oil in a heavy pot to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
In 3 or 4 batches, cook the potatoes until soft, 4 to 5 minutes per batch. They should not be brown at this point. You just want to start the cooking process. Remove each batch and drain on new/dry paper towels. Once all the potatoes have been fried at 300 degrees Fahrenheit, turn up the heat until the oil reaches 400 degrees. When the oil is hot, start frying the potatoes in batches again, cooking until the fries are golden and crisp. Remove the potatoes from the oil and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with sea salt, and serve.
2. Baked French Fries

- 1 large baking potato
- 1 tablespoon olive oil

5. Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries

- 2 large sweet potatoes
