8 Non-Waffle Recipes You Make With a Waffle Iron

There are many benefits to owning a waffle iron, and waffles on demand is only one of them. Other breakfast dishes, like french toast, sandwiches, and even cookies can be pressed between the plates of your waffle iron. Baking and cooking this way isn’t just a novelty either, it can be a serious time-saver, turning out cookies in a few minutes. 1. Oatmeal-Chocolate Chip Waffle Cookies

Cookies are ready in minutes when you make them in a waffle iron as Lauren Chattman demonstrates in this recipe from Dessert Express, via Fine Cooking. You’ll have enough batter for about 24 cookies.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions: Heat the waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In a large bowl, whisk the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Whisk in the eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the oats and chocolate chips.

Coat the grids of the waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray. Use a tablespoon or small ice cream scoop to portion out a cookie onto each waffle square. Close the iron and cook until set and beginning to brown, 1½ to 3 minutes, depending on the heat of your waffle iron. Use a thin metal spatula to transfer the cooked cookies to a wire rack and repeat with the remaining dough, coating the grids with spray as necessary.

Not in the mood for oatmeal cookies? Eating Well has you covered with this recipe for boot tracks. It is a chocolate cookie, made a little bit healthy with the addition of whole wheat pastry flour, and, of course, waffled. It is not advised that you use a Belgian waffle maker to bake the cookie. It yields about 3 dozen cookies.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup salted butter
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • ½ teaspoon espresso powder, (optional)
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Directions: Preheat a nonstick (not Belgian) waffle iron. Cream butter and sugar in a medium bowl. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, cocoa powder, oil and espresso powder (if using). Beat until thoroughly combined.

Drop the batter by rounded teaspoonfuls about 1 inch apart onto the preheated ungreased waffle iron. Close and cook until the cookies are puffed and cooked through, 1 to 1½ minutes. Waffle irons vary, so watch closely and don’t let the cookies get too dark. Transfer to a wire rack to cool until just warm. Dust the cookies with confectioners’ sugar while still slightly warm, if desired.

3. Waffle Iron Grilled Cheese

Jennifer Carden’s grilled cheese from The Toddler Café via Williams-Sonoma was meant with kid-friendliness in mind, but any adult who likes a warm cheese-filled sandwich will enjoy it too.

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices soft whole-wheat bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 slices cheese (example: cheddar or Monterey jack)

Directions: Place a sheet of aluminum foil underneath a nonstick waffle iron to aid in cleanup, just in case the cheese oozes. Preheat according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Assemble the sandwiches by buttering the outsides of the bread slices and placing the cheese slices on the insides.

When the waffle iron is hot, put the sandwiches in the waffle iron and close it. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the undersides are golden brown and the cheese is oozing. Peek once or twice to make sure they are not getting overcooked. No need to flip these because they will cook evenly on both sides. Remove the sandwiches with tongs or a fork and cool slightly. Makes two sandwiches.

4. Waffle Iron Brownies

You won’t have to worry about your brownies crumbling as you slice them into squares when you use Just a Pinch’s recipe, and bake with your waffle iron. The batter is dropped by tablespoon onto the waffle iron, creating perfectly portioned bites every time. How many servings will depend on how large you end up making your brownies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box brownie mix (prepare as directed on box)
  • ½ cup chocolate chips, mini
  • ½ cup of chopped nuts (optional)
  • cooking spray

Coating

  • 1 pound dark chocolate bark
  • chocolate, or multi colored sprinkles (optional)

Directions: Prepare brownies batter according to instructions on the box. Add the mini chocolate chips and stir them in evenly.

Spray and then heat waffle iron. Put about a tablespoon of batter into each section of your waffle iron. Close the lid and bake 3 to 6 minutes (or until cooked and not burnt!) Remove from waffle iron and let cool.

Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler, or microwave. Dip each waffle brownie into the chocolate. Place on a wax paper lined baking sheet to cool and let the chocolate solidify.

6. Waffle Iron French Toast

Perfectly golden brown french toast is achieved in Food.com’s waffled French toast. As with regular french toast, you’ll want a thicker bread so that it doesn’t fall apart after being dipped in the egg mixture, or stick to the waffle iron.

Ingredients:

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 8 slices bread

Directions: Preheat waffle maker and spray surface with non-stick cooking spray. In large bowl, whisk eggs until frothy, then add remaining ingredients and whisk until well mixed. Dip one slice of bread into mixture and turn to cover both sides. Place in waffle maker and cook until golden brown. Top with syrup or powdered sugar.

7. Waffled Banana Bread

To make banana bread with your waffle iron, a Belgian waffle maker specifically was recommended by Food Network, but another type will work too. You can even freeze any leftover waffles in a Ziploc bag, and reheat them in the toaster.

Ingredients:

  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 cup smashed banana (2 to 3 small bananas)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil, plus more for brushing waffle iron
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • Soft unsalted butter and confectioners’ sugar, for dusting, optional

Directions: Preheat a waffle iron to medium-high. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (to keep cooked waffles warm). Whisk together the flour, sugar, walnuts, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a large bowl. Whisk together the banana, oil, sour cream, vanilla and eggs in another bowl. Fold the banana mixture into the flour mixture until just combined.

Lightly brush the top and bottom of the waffle iron with oil. Fill each section about three-quarters of the way full (there should still be some waffle iron showing). Close and cook until the waffles are golden brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Keep the waffles warm in the oven or covered with foil on a plate while you cook the remaining batter. Spread with butter and dust with confectioners’ sugar if you’d like.

8. Waffled Cinnamon Rolls

Pillsbury has the recipe for when you want to put a new spin on your packaged cinnamon rolls by waffling them. Like the other recipes, using a waffle iron significantly reduces cooking time. Keep this technique in mind when you need to put breakfast on the table and are seriously pressed for time.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can refrigerated cinnamon rolls, with cream cheese icing
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions: Heat waffle maker; spray with cooking spray. Remove cinnamon rolls from can; set icing aside. For each waffle, place 1 cinnamon roll in center of waffle maker; close. Bake 3 to 4 minutes or until waffle is thoroughly cooked and golden brown. Meanwhile, in small bowl, stir together reserved icing, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until glaze is smooth. Serve glaze over hot waffles.
