The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics is here, and it’s inevitable that you will catch at least one sporting event on TV during the infamous sporting extravaganza. Whether you attend a viewing party, or simply watch the games from home, wow your guests or family members with these five Olympic-inspired recipes.
1. Olympic Torch Cake Pops
Duncan Hines’s Olympic torch cake pops will be the perfect treat to serve your guests on opening day.
1 box Duncan Hines Yellow cake mix
Duncan Hines cream cheese cake frosting
1 package (16 oz.) Vanilla CandiQuik Coating
Orange (oil or powder based only) food coloring
Waffle ice cream cones
8 fruit-flavored rolls (cherry or strawberry)
Directions: Prepare and bake cake mix as directed on box. Then let the cake cool. Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl, then mix thoroughly with frosting before letting it chill for approximately 2 hours in the refrigerator. Chop the top of the waffle cones off so the cones measure approximately 2 1/2 inches tall. Roll cake mixture into medium sized balls and chill briefly in refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until somewhat firm.
Melt CandiQuik according to the package directions, and stir in orange food coloring until the desired color is established. After this is completed, press a cake ball on top of the mini waffle cone. Then, dip the top of the cake ball into the CandiQuik by holding the end of the cone and allow the excess coating to drip off.
Quickly apply the flame-shaped fruit pieces, beginning at the base and working towards the top of the cone. If the coating dries before all the flames are attached, use a toothpick to add more coating to the cone. Finally, stick cones into a Styrofoam block to set completely.
Taste of Home provides a recipe for an Olympic-themed pizza, which involves assembling the pepperonis in the form of the Olympic rings.
2-1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
1 package (1/4 oz.) active dry yeast
1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup warm water (120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 can (15 oz.) pizza sauce
4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 package (3-1/2 oz.) sliced pepperoni
Directions: In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, yeast, and salt. Add water and oil and beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface and knead for about 6 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
Next, roll the dough into a 16-inch x 11-inch rectangle before transferring to a greased 15-inch x 10-inch x 1-inch baking pan. Press the dough 1/2 inch up the sides of pan. Spread with pizza sauce and sprinkle with cheese, then arrange the pepperonis on top of the pizza in 5 interlocking circles. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust and cheese are lightly browned.
3. Olympic Ring Cookies
A festive dish that’s easy to pack up and take to a party, work, or school is Serious Eats’ Olympic ring cookies recipe.
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Food coloring in red, yellow, green, and blue
Directions: Stir the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl and then set aside. Mix the butter, sugar, and eggs thoroughly, then stir in the cream and vanilla. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet bit by bit until completely incorporated. Separate the dough into 5 different bowls, and color each little batch to correspond to the Olympic ring colors. Wrap the dough tightly and chill for at least 4 to 5 hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll the dough, 1 color at a time, about 1/8 inch thick on a very well-floured mat or board. Keep the colors that are not being rolled in the refrigerator so they won’t get too soft. Cut out cookies using a doughnut cutter, and place on a baking sheet that isn’t greased. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until delicately browned.
4. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Cocktails

Gold “Docks of New Orleans” Ingredients:
2 oz. Sailor Jerry Rum
2 oz. fresh mango lemonade
1/4 oz. Gosling’s Rum
Directions: Mix Sailor Jerry and lemonade in a tall glass before topping with Goslings and a splash of ginger beer. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Silver “Green Wave” Ingredients:
2 oz. Absolut Vanilla
2 oz. coconut water
Simple syrup (1 part water: 1 part sugar)
Directions: Mix Absolut with coconut water in a tall glass before adding a dash of syrup. Garnish with a lime wedge and sage leaf.
Bronze “Athletic Cooler” Ingredients:
1 oz. of Maker’s Mark Bourbon (or similar bourbon whiskey)
1/4 oz. Green Chartreuse (or similar herbal liqueur)
1 ounce of ginger ale
Directions: Muddle mint leaves in bottom of tall glass before adding bourbon and herbal liqueur. Top with ginger ale and add a splash of soda and garnish with mint.
A simple, yet colorful dessert to serve at an Olympic viewing party is Taste of Home’s champion chocolate cake, garnished with M&M’s in the form of the Olympic rings.
1/2 cup butter, softened
2-1/4 cups packed brown sugar
3 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (8 oz.) sour cream
1 cup boiling water
14-16 of each color M&M: green, blue, red, yellow, black, or brown
Directions: In a bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the chocolate and vanilla, then combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Then, add to the creamed mixture alternately with sour cream. Whisk in water until smooth.
Pour into a greased 13-inch x 9-inch baking pan, and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes and invert onto a wire rack to cool completely. Finally, frost the cake and assort the M&M’s in 5 circles.
