Valentine’s Day Style Crush: Outfits for Every Occasion

Valentine’s Day — the one day of the year everyone loves to hate. One sect hates it because they’re single, and another group dreads trying to find the “right” outfit for their Valentine’s Day date. No matter how you feel about the day, or how you will be spending it, Valentine’s Day is a fantastic opportunity to bust out reds and pinks, get dressed up, or accessorize with sparkling accents. From a night out on the town to a casual gathering of friends, we’ve rounded up style-crush worthy looks for Valentine’s Day.

Burning Red

Taking some inspiration from T. Swift and her song “Red,” Valentine’s Day is the day out of the year to experiment with bold, intense reds. The Calvin Klein dress is cut to flatter the figure, and the red lace dress incorporates a material that is as hot right now as its color. But just because it is Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to go for the full-effect with a red dress.

Red accessories, like a great pair of heels, or bow-detailed clutch are just as festive. They’ll also provide a much needed pop of color if you opt for a little black dress this Valentine’s Day. Not only are the Kenneth Cole flats spot on for the holiday, they are are functional year round too.

The scalloped skirt is a more burnt orange, and can be a great day to do Valentine’s Day with a group of friends or at the office. Pair it with a sweater in black or navy and a great pair of flats.

Little Black Dress

Whoever said black is boring hasn’t seen these dresses and shoes. The Dinner Party Darling dress (far left) will bring out your inner Hepburn (think, Sabrina.) Lace is all over the place this winter, but it isn’t the only way to add texture to a dress. For laceless detailing, slip into the Zigzag Overlay dress (top row — middle), or the Aqua bandage dress. At first glance, the Zara dress looks simple, until the knots and cutouts are revealed in the back.

Even black shoes can add a little extra to an all-black ensemble. With a red heel and leopard print, the J. Renee Danko pumps in patent leather are a walk on the wild side. Gianni Bini’s sequined heels will keep you sparkling, and the bow on the Pelle Moda pumps are an elegant touch on a classic shoe.

Pretty in Pinks

Bottom Row: J. Crew Cece Leather Ballet Flats in Pink GrapefruitJ. Crew Long Cashmere Gloves in Pale PinkJ. Crew Large Sunflower Necklace in Sheer PinkBobbi Brown Sheer Lip Color, & NARS ‘Final Cut’ Blush

Valentine’s Day isn’t all about seeing red — there is plenty of pink to go around, too. Available in hues that range from blush to shocking, different pinks flatter almost every skin tone. They can be as bold as red, like the Issac Mizrahi or Eliza J dresses are. For an understated, romantic look, try the nude pink pleated skirt by Zara. To be timelessly elegant, pick the London Times a-line dress.

Dusty pale pink is a hot color and will play beautifully off a little black dress on Valentine’s Day. J. Crew has an extensive selection in this color. Cashmere gloves will keep your hands warm (and are on sale) or the pink flats can bring a bit of ballerina style to your outfit. Pink is a great choice for makeup as well. A bright pink lipstick is easier to pull off than red, and a pink blush will give you a rosy complexion.

Casually Cool

Crew Lightweight Merino Tunic SweaterGap 1969 black legging jeans, & ABS by Allen Schwartz Trickie Bootie

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about the glam — comfort can still be chic. A tunic sweater, like J. Crew’s in vibrant flame, and a pair of black skinny jeans is perfect for a casual date or for an evening spent with friends because it can either be dressed up or down depending on how you accessorize. Footwear can go a long way in this determining the look. Boots with a low or no heel at all will bring the overall feel down, and a pair of black heels will send it in the other direction. Or, you can toe the line in a pair of heeled booties.

Gold studs in the Allen Schwartz booties bring in metallics, which you can continue with a sequined clutch, or jewelry. The sweater’s “bracelet sleeve” design is a great chance to show off your best bangles and accessories. Even more gold can be brought in, or you can compliment the whole look with pearls.

Hearts on Fire

If nothing else, Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year anyone can get away with wearing heart shapes without the fear of being too “cute” or youthful. The Love Ballad Tunic and sweater with heart elbow patches will keep you festive without overdoing it, since each is done in a non-Valentine’s Day shade. If you aren’t one for wearing your heart on your sleeve, you can keep the rain away with a bubble umbrella, or protect your iPhone with a Valentine’s Day appropriate case. The earrings by Marc Jacobs and the shoes can be worn any time of the year, so even if you buy them for Valentine’s Day, you’ll get multiple wears out of them. Finally, if you really can’t imagine blatantly showing support of the holiday, at least your toes will be warm in heart decorated socks.
