Source: Betty Crocker

Super Bowl Sunday is not only the biggest day of the year for the National Football League, it’s also one of the busiest for pizza deliveries. If you’re planning on hosting a party and can’t get a hold of your pizza guy or gal, here are five football-themed foods you can serve your guests while watching the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.

1. Touchdown brownies

Kick off your Super Bowl party with these easy to make football-shaped brownies, created by Betty Crocker.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box brownie mix
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • White decorating icing

Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (325 degrees Fahrenheit for dark or nonstick pan). Line the 9-inch square pan with foil, letting the foil hang 2 inches over the sides of the pan. Spray foil with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, stir brownie mix, chocolate syrup, oil, water, and eggs until well blended, and then spread in the pan.

Bake 34 to 37 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted 2 inches from the side of the pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1.5 hours.

Using foil to lift, remove the brownies from the pan. Using a football-shaped cookie cutter, cut brownies into football shapes. Pipe on decorating icing to make the football laces.

2.  Watermelon football helmet

If you’re feeling up to a challenge, try creating the following watermelon football helmet recipe — presented by the National Watermelon Promotion Board which will wow your guests and can double as a festive centerpiece.

Ingredients:

  • 1 round watermelon
  • Assorted fruit
  • Knife
  • Sharp pencil or thin marker

Directions: Using a round watermelon, slice off a piece approximately 4 inches down on the stem end. Next, set the cut piece aside to use later for the mouth guard.

Make a curved cut from one side of the melon to the other to cut out the face portion of the helmet. Then, hollow out the entire melon.

Take the piece that was set aside in the first step and place, cut side down. Place knife at the center of the stem end and cut in half.

Take 1/2 of cut piece and draw mouth guard grid with a sharp pencil or thin marker. Remove flesh and cut out grid design using a small knife.

To assemble the helmet, place the mouth piece on a plate. Place the helmet piece on top, pushing the mouthpiece ends toward the inside of the helmet. You may need to carve a little out of the helmet ends to fit the mouth grid comfortably. Lastly, fill with fruit salad.
